Book Description

0340691905 978-0340691908 July 11, 1997
The introduction of digital TV in Europe heralds a revolution in television standards. Not only will it increase the capacity of the broadcasting channels by a factor of eight or more but the potential as a means of electronic communication is immense - from multidiffusion, pay per view and downloading of software today to interactive TV in the future. This book provides the first accessible introduction to digital TV.

This text describes the underlying principles of this new technology and its implementation through the European DVB System (Digital Video Broadcasting), which has been adopted by all member states of the European Union as well as many other countries throughout the world. After an overview of analogue TV systems and video digitization formats, the author then examines the various steps of signal processing - taken in order from transmission to reception - to facilitate an understanding of the architecture and function of the main blocks of the Integrated Receiver/Decoder (IRD) or "set-top" box. This comprehensive introduction to a new era of broadcast technology will be compulsory reading for all with an interest in this area.

Review

The title sounds promising and - to say the least - it lives up to its promises.,EESI, This is an excellent book for the more practised and competent video engineers who need to extend their knowledge from analogue to digital broadcasting... the complex technology... is put across in a clear and concise manner.,Electrical and Electronic Service Informer, Those seeking a capability and fluency in the many concepts and mechanisms of MPEG and DVB standards would do well to investigate this book... goes a long way towards encapsulating in one handy and inexpensive volume much that is essential to a broad appreciation of this important and still developing technology.,The Institution of Electrical Engineers,

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview for beginners, useful tables for experts., February 14, 2000
Comprehensive, contains all the important diagrammes and thumb rules. I recommend this book to the novice as well as to experts. Readers who are familiar with signal processing and digital communication issues will find this book very interesting and a good source of knowledge; and those who are already DVB professionals will regard it as an excellent conclusion with all the important and useful numbers, tables, and diagrams.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bible, April 28, 2004
This book is not a bible on any topic related to digital TV. It's more of a synopsis that briefly discusses what's involved in encoding, transmitted, receiving, and decoding digital signals, with an emphasis on the standards being used in Europe.

I recommend this book for engineers new to the field of digital TV; but once you have an overall idea of how a digital system works, I recommend getting something more specific to your area. This book does not have any formulas or walk-through examples.

To quote the author from the preface, "This book does not aim to make the reader an expert in digital television... The main goal is to enable readers to understand the principles of this new technology, to have a relatively global perspective on it, and...to investigate further any particular aspect by reading more specialized and more detailed books."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive, laconic, and comprehensive explanation., August 23, 1999
By A Customer
Easy to read, with all the necessary diagrammes and illustrations, this book is a formidable source of information for everyone - from a novice (like me) to a to-be-professional. Without hiding the complexity of digital television, the author makes a systematic review of the situation. No stupid remarks, no empty words. Just facts and real advice. Excellent!
