Introductory Guide Falls Short, March 22, 2009
This review is from: Digital Travel Photography (A Lark Photography Book) (Paperback)
In Digital Travel Photography, Heller stresses the fundamentals of composition, lighting, and perspective. He avoids a technical discussion of these subjects in favor of a contextual approach that deals more with your perception than focal lengths and exposure times. His theory is that your camera's manual will tell you what the camera is capable of doing, but only your intuition and perspective can actually make a photograph. The book has some fabulous tips for the beginner photographer, but it is ultimately light on content. There are a ton of beautiful photographs in the book, but he does not comment most of them. While I gleaned some very helpful tips from the book, I felt that I would have been better served by more technical material, critiques of his photographs, and more examples of the types of problems he was describing (and how to avoid or correct them).
A decent portion of the book focused on picking out proper gear. This was a disappointment to me, as it will be to anyone who has owned or researched the purchase of a digital camera. I also found some of his recommendations (including megapixel count and memory card size) to be slightly dated, albeit accurately described. You can find a much more in depth discussion of cameras and types at cnet.com, and you can find information on filters, camera bags, and other accessories all over the internet.
I would recommend this book to beginners who are looking to move away from typical casual shots. More advanced photographers who have already developed a photographic eye will most likely find this book has nothing to offer them.
