Like the back lighted display a lot.

When you unscrew the screws to get to the battery, the plastic screw holes feel like they are already stripped out.

If it keeps on working, I'll raise my rating to three stars.

The XL830L is a low priced digital multimeter that measures DC voltage, AC voltage, DC current, and resistance, the basic functions you would expect to find in a multimeter of this type. Other features include a backlight to illuminate the LCD display, a hold button to lock the display, a protective sleeve made of soft rubber, and a stand that comes out from the back to prop up the meter. The meter is palm sized, and comes with a decent set of test leads that fit securely into the jacks on the front of the meter.

In using the meter, I noticed that the display often shows some value when nothing is connected, and is very slow to return to zero, and at times it fails to do so. These seemed to be indicators of possible issues with accuracy, which unfortunately soon proved to be true.

When measuring DC voltage using the 2 volt setting, the reading should provide information up to two decimal places, but many times when checking 1.5 volt batteries, the display only showed a "1", and not the last two decimal places. After playing around with the selector dial, I was only occasionally able to get the meter to correctly display up to the hundredths place. My particular meter is either defective or quirky, but clearly this kind of unreliable performance is totally unacceptable.

Accuracy is not that critical for AC voltage, and I experienced no problems checking up to 240 volts. When measuring resistance or continuity, an audible signal is very handy. Unfortunately, this meter lacks that capability. With measuring resistance, the display has no "infinity" position, but seems to zero out relatively quickly, when the leads are brought together.

This meter is generic in the truest sense.

Is it a Fluke? No.
Could it be mistaken for a Fluke? No.
Is there any chance it was made in the same factory as a Fluke? No.
Would I trust its 600V rating? Not given a choice!

BUT...

Does it work? Yes.
Is it cheap? Yes, very.
Is it reasonably accurate? Certainly seems to be, based on quick comparisons with other meters.

I got this meter to audition it. I need to get at least 10 identical units for as little cash as possible. So far, I'm thinking this is a pretty good choice. The case doesn't snap closed properly on one of the top corners but the bumper protects it well. The test leads are not the greatest but they will probably need to be replaced periodically anyway due to normal wear and tear in an environment with kids. The circuit board is really not too bad. It came in a box with an English instruction/specification leaflet (including detailed accuracy figures for the different ranges). The rotary selector has a good feel and the 20Vdc range is 3 clicks left of OFF, same as my other meters. Initially I was a bit concerned that it reported the gain of a 2N3904 about 35% higher than another meter, but it turned out to be closer to the true value than the other instrument! Long story short: aside from the fact that it smells somewhat reminiscent of a child's paddling pool, this seems to be a pretty solid contender in the cheap multimeter category.

PS I wouldn't put too much stock in the negative reviews as their authors don't seem to be familiar with multimeters in general. You will always see small fluctuating voltages when the probes are floating because ... there are small fluctuating voltages. A "1" in the display indicates the value is out of range.

The price is insane! I tested it along with my Fluke multimeter and found it well calibrated. It has almost all the features needed for home use. The test leads are a bit flaky(hence 4 stars), but at this price it is acceptable. The backlight is impressive and so is the readings hold feature. A rubber case is also included and fits well.

If I had use for more than one I would buy alot of them. Well designed and works really great. A great value. The removable yellow rubber shock absorber is a really smart add on. Comes with battery and leads too.

I'm a working electrical engineer and I own this meter for home use. It's doesn't have true RMS AC voltage calculation like my DMM at work, but for home use it's very nice, and the price is excellent. I've never had any complaints or wished it could do more. I suppose a capacitance meter would be nice from time to time, but for most that's not necessary.

Very solid and good device. Does a good job and is accurate. HOWEVER if you do not already know how to use one of these, good luck... the instruction "page" they give you with it is horrible. Lucky for me I know how to use these, but if you never bought one before, prepare for some frustration trying to figure it out. 4 stars only due to this huge oversight.

Being a retired electronic tech these meters are very good. I purchased 3 of them to prevent having to search for one when I needed it. 1 in gararge 1 in basement and 1 in the shop as a backup

This meter seemed fine until today when it read 666 for everything. I opened it up and put in a fresh battery, no change. Looking at the PCB solder joints, this seems to have been assembled by someone who never soldered in their life until the day my unit was built. Scorch marks and cold joints.

Sure it's cheap but it's crummy too. Don't waste your money.
