Biography

"It's not a happy album, I wouldn’t say that," admits HIM frontman Ville Valo of the band’s newest release Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice. "But for the first time HIM does acknowledge that there is such a thing called ‘happiness,’ even if it is far, far away. This album is more a speculation on how to get there, — and that it is possible."

Editorial Reviews

After conquering the rest of the world
with chart-topping albums and soldout
tours, Finland s HIM won over the
States with its 2005 U.S. debut, the Top
20 Dark Light, the first album by a
Finnish band to go U.S. gold. In 2007,
Venus Doom elevated the band s
summer-of-love-gone-goth to even
harder and heavier heights and the
album debuted #12 in the U.S. Now the
new CD+DVD package featuring a 90-
minute 2007 concert from the
Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles that
includes selections from Venus Doom,
Dark Light and previous releases,
plus music videos, shorts, band interviews,
fan contest videos and other
bonuses brings the HIM concert
experience and more to an ever growing
legion of fans everywhere

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best concerts I have ever seen, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Digital Versatile Doom: Live at the Orpheum Theater (Audio CD)
I've watched a lot of concert DVD's, and have been to a lot of live shows. But this DVD really recorded one of the best, most well produced concerts I have ever seen. If you are a HIM fan, this is one of the best purchases you can make. The venue was gorgeous, the songs were some of their best across several albums, and even included my favorite, "Sleepwalking Past Hope". There are some funny moments, many great guitar solos, and basically all the best of HIM. There is also a lovely bonus in the form of a fairly long interview with Ville, and some neat fan features.

If you've never seen HIM live before, this is about as good a taste as you can get without going. Like I said, you won't be sorry if you buy this. It even includes an Audio CD so that you can take the music with you, off the dvd player.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!!, November 17, 2008

So many bands today sound great after the producers get done polishing their sound and then sound horrible live. HIM is the exception to that. They sound just as amazing live as they do recorded. The dvd and cd are both awesome and well worth the money. Bands like this are what the music industry desperately needs: talented performers, not just a really good producer!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Digital Verstatile Doom: HIM in Concert, February 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Digital Versatile Doom: Live at the Orpheum Theater (Audio CD)
Recorded at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, during the tour to support the Venus Doom album, the songs featured here are a strong representation of the HIM's catalogue. The playing here is tight, making for some truly wonderful recordings. Valo's voice is in fine form, sounding almost as good on the stage as he does in the studio (which is rather amazing, considering that he chain smokes throughout the concert). While Valo is the dynamic face of the band, and a charasmatic frontman without a doubt, the other members of HIM also demonstrate their ability to be sharp, precise musicians in a live setting. While they aren't slaves to the exact arrangements of the studio recordings, most of these tracks don't veer too far afield of their original versions. Still, the few times they do deviate, it takes the tunes to a new level, offering a fresh take.

Of course, the real gem for HIM fans is the DVD. The concert itself is actually an amalgam of two different nights played at the Orpheum (November 14 and 15 of 2007, for you trivia buffs), but the action here is seamless. You'd be hard pressed to tell what songs were recorded on what nights, and ultimately...who cares? Meiert Avis's direction brings a lush look to the proceedings, highlighting the beauty of the Orpheum itself (I've personally never set foot in this building, but I was impressed with the stunning look of the theater). While Valo is the focal point, naturally, the band is highlighted as well. They function well as a unit, and there is a sense that the band members have a strong camaraderie between them. The DVD has the advantage of not being limited to the time restraints of a CD, so the extra tracks of "Right Here In My Arms" and "VDO (Venus Doom Outro)" are included. "Sleepwalking Past Hope" is also longer on the DVD, with an extended arrangement.

Also included on the DVD is a wealth of extras that fans will love. Videos for "Bleed Well", "Passion's Killing Floor", "Venus Doom", "Love In Cold Blood", "Cyanide Sun", "The Kiss Of Dawn" and "Dead Lover's Lane" are all included, as well as interviews, a fan photo gallery and the winner of the "HIM's Big Fan" contest. All in all, it really is a must for any fan of HIM.
