"A typewriter is a means of transcribing thought, not expressing it."
--Marshall McLuhan

Shelly Palmer is one of the few writers that can analyze and report technical data while engaging and edifying us with the facts (past/present/future). He has passion. I was a fan of Television Disrupted: The Transition from Network to Networked TV, 2nd Edition when it came out and spent a great deal of time myself listening to studio executives describe and prognosticate the future of digital media at technology tradeshows and summits like CES, IPTV World, NAB and Digital Hollywood (which Shelly would speak at).

In Digital Wisdom, Shelly Palmer, speaks to us directly. If you dare call or consider yourself a "digital marketer," you might want to ruminate on what that moniker actually means in Metamerica and the Super-Digital Age. As digital technology evolves, do we master these tools or allow these tools to master us? He is right... technology is getting more powerful and less expensive, but at what cost?

Maybe my expectations were too high. I expected less wit and more wisdom. This reads like, and presumably is, a series of blog postings concatenated to lead the reader through several hypotheses, opinions, observations and the occasional insight but falls short of offering insight that incites action. There are many instances where a hypothesis or observation is made without any conclusion or recommendation - it just leaves you hanging. Some of the anecdotes or stories leave you without an ending, a resolution, or a recommendation on how or where to proceed.

As a futurist, I am constantly thinking about, looking into and living in the future. To be able to do this well I have a lot of things that I read. On a daily basis I read Shelly Palmer as he serves up information I would want to know about. That's knowledge.

Reading"Digital Wisdom" provides just that, wisdom about the digital landscape. Shelly makes is easy to be wise about the digital world we live in. A great book that provides what it promises; wisdom about the digital in which we live. Highly recommended!
