Book Description

October 19, 2000 0970493207 978-0970493200
Part I concentrates on the structure of the actual programming data that must be transmitted. The structure is the digital transport stream and is the same format for digital terrestrial, satellite and cable alike. Part II then looks in detail at the actual transmission mechanism for digital terrestrial signal transmissions as defined by the DVB-T for transmissions first adopted in Europe. Part III goes on to describe the actual architecture (hardware and software) of the set top boxes needed to receive and decode the DVB signals. Included here is an introduction to the very complex MHP middleware. Part IV then looks at the US ATSC system for the transmission of digital TV, employing the 8-VSB technology. The DVB-T and the ATSC systems are then compared technically in part V. Part VI then describes the programming formats such as HDTV. Part VII gives some standard theory underlying the techniques. In particular Fourier transform theory is detailed here.

From the Inside Flap

Television has not really changed very much since its first introduction in the 1950's. Now some 50 years later we are on the verge of a revolution ~ a total change in the technology, the programming and the media that will transform the entertainment industry forever. All this is possible with the advent of the new digital technology, and the techniques that have now been developed. This book gives a detailed introduction to these technologies and techniques, specifically in the area of terrestrial transmission.

“Two main standards have been developed over recent years; the ATSC system in the US, and the DVB-T system in Europe. ”

These two systems are now being deployed in many countries around the world for transmission of the new digital services. This book starts with the detailed description of the digital data format used. It then talks about the compression algorithm MPEG-2 that allows so much data to be transmitted into the home. Both the transmission methods are then detailed with full explanation of the underlying theoretical techniques of 8-VSB and COFDM, including a full comparison of the two systems. Also included are detailed descriptions of the operation of the digital receiving devices, or set top boxes, used for the reception of both the standard and the high definition television formats. A section is also included for the more mathematically minded to allow a deeper understanding of the underlying theoretical principles. Included is a glossary of abbreviations, terms and expressions provided to allow someone new to the subject a quick start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good clear information, March 4, 2003

This review is from: Digital television, DVB-T COFDM and ATSC 8-VSB (Paperback)
A well thought out book. I'm not new to digital TV, and I found the explanations very clear and understandable - although certainly a little biased towards DVB-T rather than 8-VSB. I would say a good book for the beginner wanting to know more about the European standard. I did notice one or two small errors and would advise an errata sheet is included in the future

2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware, January 6, 2003

This review is from: Digital television, DVB-T COFDM and ATSC 8-VSB (Paperback)
Although this book has some good explanations, charts and diagrams, the reader should beware that the book has some very serious errors in certain sections (particularly section 5). It would appear that the book was self-published, and probably did not undergo sufficient peer-review. This book should not be used as a primary reference.

This review is from: Digital television, DVB-T COFDM and ATSC 8-VSB (Paperback)
An excellent book with well thought out explanations and diagrams. If you're interested in the technology and standards of digital TV transmission and its decoding this is the book to have. With DVB-T, ATSC, the transport packet format, MPEG-2, modulation, set-top-box architecture, audio standards, and much more explained, the 230 pages are packed with information. Highly recommended to both technical and marketing people involved with digital TV
