Product Description

DigiTech iStomp has the ability to turn into any pedal from the DigiTech Stomp Shop without having to take it off your pedalboard. The iStomp works just like every other stompbox except you can completely change the iStomp to any pedal from the Stomp Shop. Simply connect your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to load an e pedal to your iStomp. In about the same time it takes to download a song you can turn the iStomp from a distortion to a reverb, a phaser to an overdrive, or a delay to a chorus.

It is easy to use, and very flexible.

And people don't actually read the disclaimer that you have to have the real APPLE lightning cable, they think their pedal doesn't work and sell them for cheap!
Kelly Ross
Overall, it was a good purchase, even though now I want another one (for more effects)...and a pedal board.

With electronics, there is a counter-intuitive-yet-true statement that products trying too hard to be a "ahead of the times" will more quickly end up "behind the times". The DigiTech iStomp - which is undoubtedly a well-constructed, quality product - may well fall victim to that truth.

The iStomp is digital effects pedal that simulates ONE effect pedal (distortion, chorus, compressor, reverb, etc.) at a time. The effects are stored in the StompShop, which is an iOS (free) app, and then uploaded to the physical stompbox in a process that takes about 30 seconds. Once uploaded, no connection is required with the iOS device - the pedal will work the same on stage or in the middle of a cornfield (supposing you have the 9v power supply attached).

The quality of the effects, in my opinion, is actually quite good. Some of them suffer a little volume drop, but the overall results are excellent. I'm a recovering pedal addict, so a single unit that can switch from reverb to flanger in 30 seconds is a whole lot more appealing than having to BUY a reverb AND a flanger pedal, only to use the latter once in a blue moon.

But from a meta perspective, the concept begins to fall apart. Since the pedal can only be one thing at one time, it doesn't have practical versatility for anyone desiring effect changes in the middle of a set list, or even an intense jam session. There are sticky labels you can place for some of the more popular effects, but otherwise, you have no idea what the four rotating knobs actually do, unless you have memorized it.

The interface with my iPhone was fairly simple, but it often asked me to unplug or restart the device because the connection was lost. Perhaps I did something wrong, but I feel like that process needs to be almost idiot-proof.

Looks like all the istomp downloadable pedals are free now except The Impossible pedal which is still downloadable for $19.99. The istomp is now worth it if all 46 pedals remain free and if the istomp is around $20-$40 rangeThe istomp can only be 1 pedal at a time, if you find the istomp under $40, it is totally worth it because it can transform into 46 pedals for free at the time of this writing, October 2013. It was $225 when it first came out a few years back, and the downloads used to cost .99 to $19.99 but now they about all free except 1.

But if you find it for more than $50 it would be wiser to buy a digitech rp155 multi effects pedal. There really isn't a point in buying the istomp and changing the effects, it takes 30-50 seconds each time.and you can only use 1 effect at a time. wiser to go with a multi effects pedal unless you find this pedal very cheap.. With a multi effects pedal you can use more than 1 effect at once and it doesn't take 30 seconds to change effects each time. I found mine (istomp)for $25 used at guitar center which was justifiable. There's always a lot of multi effects pedals at guitar center on sale, sometimes around $50. The concept behind the istomp is doomed for failure unless they have some extremely unique downloadable pedals for free on the iTunes App Store. Also note that the istomp I have comes with an adaptor that works with my iphone 4, I don't know if iphone 5 users will have a problem? This pedal may be disposable in a few years if your iphone goes out, I don't know how it's gonna go once you change phones and your iphone becomes broken. A new wire to connect to a different phone costs $40. It's made in the USA. It's a good solid plastic body.

This pedal is a great concept from beginners to "cost restricted" pros!
First thing and this is VERY important, if your iphone is past the 4, you need to buy this adapter with the pedal:
Apple Lightning to 30-Pin Adapter (0.2M)
Spend the money on the actual Apple product, it does cost more, but it's the only one guaranteed to work, other aftermarket cheaper ones do not work, Apple designed this that way.
That being said, the pedal and adapter arrived the same day, I plugged it into mt iphone 5C running ios 8 and it worked perfectly from the start.

1) Unlike when it was first introduced, all pedals are FREE to download (with exception of Adrian Belew's signature pedal) so you get every basic effect imaginable.
2) People complain that it can only store/run a single pedal at a time, there's a great explanation for that, the processor inside the pedal is huge so when you load an effect it operates solely on it, it doesn't try to share processing ability with multiple effects, so they sound great.
3) I love the design of the pedal itself, nice and sturdy, great size

For the beginner:
You get to play with 20+ effects so that you can see what they actually do before you buy them, do you need a phaser or a flanger? Reverb or delay? Now you can find out....

For the Pro:
Same concept, except before you buy that Strymon for $250 try the Lexicon reverb on one of these, to justify the purchase, etc... I got sick of buying effects only to end up re-selling them on eBay,with this unit I get to try anything I get an inclination to purchase before I spend the money on the real thing, this pedal is a time and money saver!
