5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great debut CD - the new "Human League", October 22, 2005

I really enjoy this album. Very electronic, simple yet complex at the same time. The singer on this album sounds like a laid-back version of the Human League, except the songwriting is much better (when I popped this into my CD player, my wife thought it was a new Human League album that was far superior to their recent - and past - effots).

Favorite tracks are "Simplicity", and the previously released "XRV" and "Satellite". Other standouts include "Chant". Highly recommended if you are looking for some song-based techno music that is not too retro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album!, November 18, 2005
This review is from: The Dignity of Labour (Audio CD)
I've been waiting for YEARS for this CD to be released, and I have to say that it does not disappoint! Every track is a work of art, an intricate blend of dynamic and moving music, soothing vocals, and a great message, to boot! I love this CD! The only thing that could make this CD more perfect would be a little more variety in styles/tempos or a little more "danceability", but by no means am I saying that this album is boring! It's great fun to listen to in any setting, whether on headphones, computer, or even in a noisy car. ;)
I think this is an excellent album with a strong, positive message and I highly reccommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent synth-pop., January 23, 2012

I bought this CD after hearing one of the artist's songs on a compilation CD. What a pleasant surprise. The tunes are very catchy, but written and produced with a sophistication that goes beyond many synth-pop records. I've gotten to know these songs so well because I've found myself wanting to hear them over and over again. I hope there will be more from this artist in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quiet masterpiece, June 6, 2010

I've had the privilege of knowing Kirk, the author of this wonderful techno album, for many years. TDOL album, along with the two that precede it, make up a wonderful collection of thoughful, soulful and fun pieces of art and dance. The best comparison I can make is to when I first heard Howard Jones live while I was living in London, UK. The quality is equally as high, the listening rewards just as wonderful. The tone of TDOL, however, is more in the vein of a rhythmically savvy Depeche Mode. Kirks vocals are very good. But what makes his work brilliant is his keyboard arrangements. I often get chills and goosebumps listening to his songs, even after years of listening to him. His work is very rewarding lyrically as well as emotionally. Expect both a sense of playfulness as well as darkness with memorable melodies and great beats.
