This review is from: Stephen A. Douglas and the Dilemmas of Democratic Equality (American Profiles) (Hardcover)
Good analysis of the fundamental issues that led to the war between the States. Douglas was one of the most important political leaders of the time. His positions on the issues of the day formed the basis for most of the planks of the Democratic platform. Huston breaks them down effectively. He is succinct and to the point. I would have liked to have a little more analysis on some of the bigger issues (such as the Dred Scott decision). But, if you're looking for scholarly analysis of the antebellum political scene and the role Stephen Douglas played, this book is an excellent choice.
