The Best Bluegrass Video Ever?,
By
This review is from: The Dillards: A Night in the Ozarks - An Audiolithograph (DVD)
When John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) produced this film back in the early 90s, it captured one of the best bands of all time in their formative home environment. Mitch Jayne still had some hearing, Pop Dillard was very much alive, and the family and neighbors all came around for some spectacular music and stories. The band never sounded better.
For those looking for the "Darlin Boys", you'll be disappointed. These are real Missouri country people, not a television stereotype. Rodney's wife, a fine clawhammer banjo player, picks one, there is some down home dancing, and some interesting interviews; but it's mostly about the music the Dillards made over their amazing career. The VHS has long been unavailable. The DVD will have to be an improvement on both the video and the sound. It's been too long coming, but thank goodness it is available again.

This review is from: The Dillards: A Night in the Ozarks - An Audiolithograph (DVD)
A Night In The Ozarks was filmed live at a Salem, Missouri farmhouse, welcoming the audience into their living room as the boys rehearse for a show. We see The Dillards family and friends' spirited live performances of their best-known songs. Featuring the original line-up of The Dillards - Rodney and Douglas Dillard, Mitch Jayne and Dean Webb - this documentary also features a special appearance by Homer Dillard Sr., the family patriarch whose incredible musicianship and energy interact with the boys to bring the family together in a memorable demonstration of the real Dillard sound. The documentary was produced and conceived by John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who attributes The Dillards' musical and performing influence on him as the main catalyst that led to NGDB's landmark album Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Includes a new bonus feature with John McEuen discussing the making of this documentary. Previously available only via mail order, A Night In The Ozarks has been unavailable for over 10 years.

The Dillards are from my home town and are good friends of my family. The porch scenes were filmed at the Fiebleman farm at Howes Mill, MO. I enjoyed seeing some of my family members as they gathered around the porch.
The music is pure Ozarks bluegrass. Each of the band members is very talented. There's nothing like sitting on the porch listening to the Dillards. --- Gigi Jordan Hunter

I bought this DVD for my father who is a big fan of The Dillards. I watched most of it with him and I liked the "down home" feel of it. Much of it is filmed at their home and you feel like a guest in their living room as they talk, play music, dance and laugh. Would recommend to anyone who is a fan of The Dillards or bluegrass music.

to see family and freinds playing together is great, the chats on the porch with the group members is like a step back in time. Mitch Jayne is very funny he seems to say more than the others, and his humour is very enjoyable to listen to. Watching and listening to the guys playing on the back porch in the rain makes the whole thing so much better, its like a live concert in your own home. you get a real look at life in the ozarks and if you read Mitch's book you will get more of an insight.

A great DVD of American bluegrass music and the story behind the members of this group. The homemade style (with excellent quality) of the video only adds to the authenticity and down-home feeling it leaves with the viewer.

"A Night in the Ozarks: An Audiolithograph" has it all--family, friends, music on the porch, music in the house, tall tales, reminiscing, Missouri Ozarks scenery. This beautiful dvd left me feeling like I'd just made a visit home. Thank you, John McEuen and crew for making it happen and for the glimpses of what went on "back stage". And a standing ovation to the Dillards for this dvd and for the many years of entertainment and inspiration they've given us.
