Editorial Reviews

Review

For dim sum fans, dining can be a delicious mystery. When the cart rolls around, you don't ask; you just point and eat. But if you've ever wondered what exactly is inside that dumpling or those deep-fried whatnots, a set of flashcards from Chronicle Books is here to help. Adorned with photos of egg custard buns, white turnip cakes, taro balls, shark fin dumplings, and the like, the cards offer a description of each item, its Chinese characters, the Chinese pronunciation, and the English translation. (If you'd rather not know you're crunching on chicken feet, send the cards to your friends; they're also postcards.) A quick drill before lunch can help you work up an appetite. And don't worry: There won't be a quiz. -Boston Globe

This review is from: Dim Sum: 30 Flash Postcards (Irresistible Postcards) (Cards)
Each of these 30 cards is a postcard. But I can't imagine you'll ever mail one, because you'll want to keep them all for yourself.

When you go to a dim sum restaurant, the waiters drive carts around and you pick-and-choose the items you want to eat. You're charged by the plate; some, obviously, are more expensive than others. However, if you're new to the dim sum experience, the choices can be overwhelming; there's just so far you can go by pointing randomly at steamed or fried lumps that look appealing. At some point, you may want to know what an item is (so that, perhaps, you can ask for it by name when it's missing).

Each of these cards has a clear picture of one of the most common items found at a dim sum restaurant, such as shrimp dumpling, glutinous rice with chicken, sesame ball. It also includes a few items that are less common, at least at the dim sum restaurants I've been to, like pig's blood congee. The card also has the Chinese characters for the item and its pronunciation (such as "ha gow" for shrimp dumpling). The whole deck is the size of a small paperback book, so you could shove this into your purse without feeling like a tourist.

Do I need this? Probably not. But it's fun. And it would be a WayCool stocking stuffer for a foodie friend. I'm sure to buy a few more for that very purpose.
