The DIME mystery anthology takes us back to the days of dime novels, pulp fiction, Black Mask, Thrilling Detective and Manhunt. A pretty fair collection of mostly noir stories. In an anthology like this one never knows what to expect. And as usual this collection works on the bell curve, a couple of duds, a couple of gems and everything else falling somewhere in between.

Two standouts are Stephen Rogers trio of shorts and Paul D. Marks' OUT OF TIME. Rogers' three short-shorts (FIRED; TEA FOR TWO, SCONES FOR ONE; A CONVERSATION OVER DRINKS), all have interesting twists, even though one is only half a page long. Marks' OUT OF TIME is a sultry noir tale set in South Beach that satisfies the urge for revenge.

So turn down the lights (but not off of course), watch the shadows criss cross the room, try not to be startled by that loud noise you hear and get cozy (if you can) with DIME.

One sour note. I would have read this collection sooner, but it seems they forgot to include the table of contents and since I like to pick and choose stories by title, when I don't know the authors, I've put this off for a few months. But I'm sorry I did. Even if you have to hunt and peck through the pages to find the stories it's worth your while.
