About the Artist

The story of The McGees has never been firmly documented but the tale of how the three McGee brothers met is the stuff of legend. Pancho, Lefty and Cousin McGee, as it turns out, were separated at birth, and were raised without knowledge of each other’s existence. Folklore has it that Pancho and Lefty met just past their draft ages in a Tennessee music store, where they both happened to be playing the exact same original song at the exact same time (though in different keys). The two became fast friends and began playing music together, still without knowledge that they were actually kin. Imagine their surprise when they invited their respective parents to attend their first public performance, only to have one set of parents arrive. Ma and Pa McGee could keep their secret no longer and 'fessed up to the new-found siblings the existence of a third McGee brother, inexplicably named Cousin, whom they had last heard was living on his wits by crafting coo-coo clocks at a trailer park community in the mountains... Being a "30 something" and having more varied taste in musical genres I find "Dimestone Romeos" by The McGees an awesome debut album.The folk/country/pop mix sound reminds me of Crowded House meets Jacob Dylan (not bad artists to be compared to!).From the catchy strumming and melody of "You and I" to the ballad "I Only Cry" this cd offers a varied selection of songs that don't all sound the same! The cover version of "Rock Soldiers" is better than the original in my opinion."One Of These Days",a Beatlesque sounding tune has become my favourite on the disc. Stumbling upon "Dimestone Romeos" has given me incentive to visit my local cd store more often.How many other gems by other artists am I missing out on? How many of us can relate to the "Rich and Tina's" of the world (Track #4)...or better yet...are Rich or Tina's! Great work Pancho,Lefty and Cousin McGee.Keep the music alive.
