Editorial Reviews

2009 release from the Brazilian vocalist. D'Improvviso recalls places and tastes connected to the Brazilian music of the past and in particular to the '60s. A genuine album touched by a singular Afro-Jazz sound, whose compositions show several aspects expressed by the different essences of the huge Brazilian music tradition. 14 tracks. Schema.

Rosalia's third album is a wonderful one. D'Improvviso, (which translates to "The Unexpected?" in Italian) is a return to the original style that fans loved on "Garota Moderna." The album has the Italian Jazz/Lounge arrangements of her debut album (with occasional addition of Brazilian instrumentation) that doesn't completely overpower her voice. Unlike her first Schema album, the instrumentation is live instead of electronic. Those who liked her first album, will still like this one too, I think.

She does several enjoyable boass novas and remakes of classic sambas (Quiem Quiser Encontrar O Amor -- which Suba also remade a few years back) and a few Bossa Novas. Carolinha Carol Bela is one of the first singles off this album, and it's a great album. If you can see the music video, it's also wonderful.

Overall, a great album.

[**** 1/2] From the thriving Brazilian community in Italy comes Rosalia de Souza's homage to the Afro-Brazilian and Latin jazz sounds of the 1960s. Four songs are composed by Tomaz Di Cuntro [Toto], who provides vocals; other songs come from the pen of Dori Caymmi, Jorge Ben, Antonio Paulo, Danilo Caymmi, and others. Supporting musicans, all Italian, give a smooth, sophisticated European fullness to the sound. It is far more jazz than carnvial in feel and mood, despite the variety of rhythms. Indeed, the engineering gives the recording a soft edge and slight flatness (positioning of instruments) to the sound. Because of its variety, modern writing, and jazz mellowness, I do enjoy this album and its distinctive contribution to contemporary Brazilian music.

I just recently "discovered" this artist & album. Whether one calls this type of music Afro-Brazilian, Bossa Nova, Jazz, it doesn't matter. Actually, it sounds like the continuing evolution of modern Brazilian/World music, and has been on many minds since the revival of interest in Bossa Nova, now in its 52d year. This is an international phenomenon, coming from Portugal, Cape Verde, Brazil, West Africa, Cuba, the US, France, Germany, and Italy, probably just to name a few. I was already familiar with Toco and S-Tone when I learned about Rosalia de Souza. Finding these three artists has been like discovering a new continent, planet, or species. I was 12 years old when I first heard "Garota de Ipanema", and my love affair with this music has only increased over time. The title song is sung in Italian, and it is one of the most beautiful love songs I have ever heard. Rather unusually, the lyrics describe a happy, as opposed to a tragic, love affair, and somewhat belies Shelley's: "Our sweetest song doth tell of saddest thought." Whatever name one gives this music, it is just what we need in an otherwise often sad world. Happy, and yet profound. What a combination!! "Che miracolo! Questa gioia che tu mi dai!"
