Image of Jordi Savall

Jordi Savall is an exceptional figure in todays music world. For more than thirty years he has been devoted to the rediscovery and performance of neglected musical treasures as a soloist and director of his three ensembles. He has restored an essential repertoire to all those with ears to hear it. Except for the happy few who already revere it, the viola da gamba, is an instrument so refined ... 3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful performances BUT... December 6, 2010
Format:Audio CD
This exquisitely presented 3-SACD compilation, released to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the birth of Saint Francis Borgia (1510-72), the 4th Duke of Gandia, aims to chart the rise and fall of one of the most powerful European families through the music of their time, covering a period of over 6 centuries from the Moorish occupation of Valencia in 1063 to the canonisation of Saint Francis in 1670. En route, pieces by composers as significant as Binchois, Dufay, Josquin and Isaac are represented; so too are important Iberian composers (like Milà, Morales and Cabanilles) and works from many of the major Cancionero collections (Montecassino, Palacio, Calabria and Gandia), and there is even a Credo setting from a Mass allegedly by Saint Francis himself (CD 3, track 11). In addition, the 3 SACDs are accompanied by a bonus DVD, explaining how the project came about, and a beautiful 381 page book, which comes complete with detailed liner notes in 6 languages, song texts/translations, and several illustrations/facsimile reproductions. Lastly, the performances themselves are both varied and excellent, as one is accustomed to from Savall and his outstanding group.

So why only 3 stars...?

My only real gripe - although admittedly, for Savall enthusiasts at least, it is significant - concerns the large volume of reissued material from previous Savall discs. In fact, across the 3 CDs, this equates to more than an hour of music: 6 tracks taken from Alfons V el Magnànim: El Cancionero de Montecassino (Alia Vox AV9816 A + B), 4 tracks from

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money September 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I recently attended a live concert of this material, alas, minus Monserrat Figueras, who was indisposed, and I will order the set and treasure it for its new approach to the music. Yes, there is some duplication of material previously recorded, which I noticed at the concert. Even so, music lovers, including lovers of the works of Jordi Savall, Monserrat Figueras, Hesperion XXI and Capella Real, will appreciate the overarching line of the organization of the program. I am a devoted fan of these performers, dating back to approximately 1988, having heard them in settings as intimate as churches in Switzerland to the immense Hagia Irene church in Istanbul, Alice Tully Hall and the Salle de Concert at the Cite de la Musique in Paris. (The concert ended on a dramatic note, when the piece coinciding with the expulsion of the last Moors from Spain was marked by the departure from the stage and down the aisle of three musicians, including an Iraqi oud player. I hope this is captured on the DVD.)

If you are hesitating, get the set. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cross section of the music of the era January 4, 2014

Great selection. Not having any of Savall's music as yet, this was a good start. Highly recommended for those interested in the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well noted but four stars May 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not having any of Jordi Savall's music, this compendium is very attractive to me. I heard parts of it on XM satellite radio, and immediately looked into it, noting Ms. Evil's review. Her points are very well made, but not having any of this music, I was not bothered that some of it is a duplicate of music on other CDs.

It is enthralling music, very attention demanding - and getting it. The book is exquisite. It suits my listening needs very well.
