Book Description

3 and up
Rhyming word couplets and colorful illustrations provide young readers with a look at a busy multicultural cast of characters who cheerfully cook, eat, and serve together during a busy day at Joe's Diner.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-A day at the diner is delightfully presented with rhyming text and colorful illustrations. Hungry patrons and playful children enjoy the friendly atmosphere as cooks prepare burgers and ice-cream sundaes and waiters serve their satisfied-looking clientele. The crowd includes many ethnic groups, male and female diners and workers, as well as a visually disabled man with a guide dog. Although beginning readers would enjoy exploring this book on their own, it is especially suited to reading aloud because of the catchy, short text and clear, lively pictures.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Catchy, rhyming pairs of words and bustling double-page-spread watercolor illustrations express the vitality and informal sociality of a fast-food diner. From the opening pages ("Waiters hurry. Busboys scurry") through the rush of breakfast ("Bacon sizzles. Syrup drizzles") and the scramble of preparation, serving, and cleanup all through the day, the words and pictures celebrate the noise, smell, taste, and texture of a day in the diner. The view swings from the restaurant area ("Hostess greets. Crowd eats") to the soda fountain ("Stool twirls. Chocolate swirls") to the cooks and dishwashers in the kitchen ("Bagels toast. Turkeys roast"). There are close-ups of people ("Boy slurps. Baby burps") and of luscious food. All ages, all cultures, find meals and talk in this neighborhood gathering place. Children will see why they feel at home here. Hazel Rochman
