5.0 out of 5 stars Classic film, classic soundtrack, December 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Diner: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Diner is my all-time favorite film because it's just so natural: the dialogue, the action, the actors are very real and comfortable. The same can be said for the soundtrack: 20 great songs from the early days of rock & roll that sound good and feel good anytime anywhere. If you've seen the movie, you'll love singing along on Ain't Got a Home; if you haven't see the movie, this album stands on its own (but do see the movie!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Oldies Soundtrack!, July 31, 2000

This review is from: Diner: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
During the past few months, oldies has been my favorite kind of music. I go to the Gypsy's Shiny Diner restaurant occasionally, not only to eat but also to put a quarter in the Jutebox to listen to my favorite '50s rock'n'roll song. I went there yesterday and after that I went over to Borders and found the soundtrack to the movie Diner, and immediatally bought it. This is another great oldies soundtrack next to "American Graffiti." It includes the songs "I Wonder Why," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," "A Teenager In Love," and "A Thousand Miles Away." I just played the whole soundtrack on my CD player and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is the kind of soundtrack where you don't have to skip any tracks. Just listen to the whole thing and feel good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Food, Good Music, Good Movie, January 23, 2000
This review is from: Diner: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This soundtrack should satisfy just about eveyone, it's got good old rock & roll, rockabilly, pop standards, and beautiful ballads. You like rockin' rockabilly, you get Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran and Jack Scott, a stereo version of "A Teenager In Love" by Dion & the Belmonts, two classics by Bobby Darin, and one by the king himself Elvis. This is a great soundtrack with a little bit for everyone.

This CD is a great collection of memorable songs from the 50's. The movie is one of my all-time favorites. The cast all went on to fame and fortune and the soundtrack expresses the feel of the era.

The first time I heard this album was in my Godfathers house, the tune I loved the most was the "theme to a summer place". I liked the film as well even though I saw it after I heard the soundtrack. There's really good 50's and early 60's rockabilly and doo wop tunes on this. Highly recommended is the original version of the Summer place theme. This pops up in a slightly different form on other compilations, not nearly as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars soundtrack is integral to film, September 21, 2011
This review is from: Diner: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is a great soundtrack that stands independently from the equally excellent film.

I love the film "Diner". It's a great movie because the subject matter is realistic and most men can epathize with a close circle of friends. That's what the movie is about...how life and an expected [but perhaps dejected] maturity impacts a group of lifelong friends. Back before it was perfected, this movie is kind of a precursor to the same format as Seinfeld...a show about nothing that is very entertaining.

Enough said about the movie since this soundtrack is a great collection independent from the movie. However, what truly gives this soundtrack a "kick" is that the characters in the film take their music seriously, including one lead character where music is EVERYTHING to him.

So, in keeping with the theme of music being so important, there is an allusion that these choice tracks are that...not random reflections of an era but songs viewed as cool and essential by the characters, particularly the Daniel Stern character "Schrevie". That's why for the 50's era, you get some essential eclectism, these characters would have not just listened to what was on the top 40, they would have desired the "deep tracks" Thus, you get Bluesmen Jimmy Reed, Lowell Fulson (pretty rare for a mainstream soundtrack), rockabilly's Jack Scott and Eddie Cohran and rockers Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis. This is not 50's fluff but what a music afficiado during that era would have listened to.

That is why this is such a cool soundtrack!
