2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By IcelandReviewer on November 21, 2010
Format: Paperback
This book is a healthy antidote to the obscurantism that characterizes much contemporary poetry. Joe O'Connell has a strong poetic sensibility and this collection of direct, emotional and often humorous poems will have a wide appeal. "Dingle Day" includes insightful reflections on universal themes such as love, sex, sport, music and art; the magical beauty of the Irish landscape is another prominent theme; and the poems about the demon drink are particularly good. Pervading the collection is a philosophy of life that reflects O'Connell's background as a biochemist, and those of a scientific bent, including those who do not usually read poetry, will enjoy this book. Overall, these unpretentious poems from Ireland are stimulating, sometimes surprising, and definitely well worth the price.
