5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it..., January 23, 2008
This review is from: Dinner For Five: The Complete Series (DVD)
I haven't even watched every episode but already this DVD set is worth every penny I paid for it. The concept of ths show is genius. Dinner, drinks, cigars and talk that is hilarious, sometimes sad and touching, exciting and always insanely entertaining. Rarely does an episode not deliver some unexpected delights and the numbers of "classics" are too numerous to mention. If you like the "real" Hollywood or just storytelling in general you will be spellbound by this show. "Dinner for Five" makes "Inside the Actors Studio" look a little phoney and forced in comparison. The show's breezy, spontaneous style is captivating letting loose the truly most talented storytellers to wow you. In addition it just might prove that Burt Reynolds is one of the most gifted gab artists that the entertainment world has ever seen. That alone makes the investment worth it. If you're hesitating a little like I did-- stop. You won't regret it

4.0 out of 5 stars I love the show, January 13, 2008
This review is from: Dinner For Five: The Complete Series (DVD)
A little pricey, but Im a huge fan of the show. The first season looks and sounds terrible. It gets better by the season though. If you love movies and like to hear stories about making them and the actors that are in them, this is a really cool show. I hope this show comes back to IFC..

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for aspiring actors, writers, directors, producers, or just film fans in general., November 29, 2008

Listen, the camera is running, and the people featured on the show know it, so don't expect completely uninhibited convo. But for the most part, all the people featured on this program are very engaging and awesome to listen to speak. Jon Favreau is great keeping everyone in check, piping in, but not taking over the conversation at any time. As an actor, it's wonderful to hear actors talk about their experiences, etc. Same goes with other people in the industry who have achieved success and like to share their stories and wisdom. It's a shame this show is no longer running on IFC channel. Maybe if I make it as an actor one day, I can take over for Mr. Favreau. Definitely recommend this great set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dinner for Five: The Complete Series, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Dinner For Five: The Complete Series (DVD)
This show is fantastic. Every episode is insightful and entertaining, even the ones that you don't expect. Sometimes the guests in an episode won't sound like the most interesting group of people at first, but you'll be surprised once you watch it. It's really a great show. My only problem with my purchase is that there are aboslutely no features. NONE. Not one. Having rented the first season d.v.d from Netflix, I know that it has TONS of features. But they aren't included in the complete series box-set. This seems strange to me as most box-sets come with EXTRA features, they're usually overloaded with even more features than the seasons by themselves. In this case it's the exact opposite. So that's disappointing, especially since they don't tell you that before you buy it. SO BE CAREFUL. If you really want the features, you'll have to buy the seasons seperately, or wait for a second edition of the box-set 'cause this one has all the episodes - and they're all GREAT, not a dog in the bunch - but there's no features at all.

I bought the entire series as a birthday gift for myself, which shows how much I loved the first season. Perhaps it was the best season. The other seasons are good, as well, but the conversations more often devolve into locker room banter.
Jon Favreau is a very knowledgeable host and is often(not always) good at drawing out guests, who are not speaking much.
I recommend the series, but am disappointed that Seasons 2-4 do not have the additional features that Season 1 has. I ask myself if Favreau lost interest in the enterprise toward the end? He's not in the final episode. Perhaps his focus quickly moved on to some other pusuit.
The comedians' participation, for the most part, seems lost on the actor-diners, including Favreau. Perhaps stand-up requires different mental muscles than acting.
I enjoy very much the dynamics among the guests, which is different each week. Anyone interested in group therapy would be fascinated.
In spite of some disappointments, I recommed purchasing the entire series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally the whole series, but no extras., January 24, 2008
This review is from: Dinner For Five: The Complete Series (DVD)
I was really excited seeing that they finally released the whole series, i always really enjoyed this when it was on. The Only problem is the dvd set has absolutley nothing extra. This is a series that has to have alotta outtakes, whether their cut because of time for the show or for another reason, their has to be hours of outtakes.

So if you like the show buy this, although being disapointed with the no xtras on the set, it still was well worth it.
