Publication Date: October 1, 2008 | Series: One Year
Getting the kids to turn off the TV and video games is challenge enough—let alone gathering as a family to read and discuss the Bible! One Year of Dinner Table Devotions & Discussion Starters helps families start where they are already gathered together on a daily basis—around the dinner table. As the meal comes to a close, family members can take turns turning to the dinner-table devotion for that day, designed to be done together as a family in 10 to 15 minutes. The result is a meaningful daily discussion in which every family member can participate, drawing the whole family closer to God . . . and each other.
"God has been preparing me my whole life for teaching his Word," says Nancy Guthrie. "He has blessed me with so many sound Bible teachers to sit under--from my days as a college student in Bible classes, to terrific Bible Study Fellowship leaders, gifted pastors -- as well as several teachers like Tim Keller and John Piper that I listen to almost daily on my ipod."
Nancy's life experience--dealing with the loss of two of her children--has signi???cantly affected her teaching substance and style. "I've had to dig into God's Word in search of answers to hard questions about how he works, and I ???nd that my listeners usually have the same struggles and questions. And while I openly share the deep hurts in my life, I also like to laugh. People who hear me teach say that I'm very real, and that is certainly what I want to be." "To me, God's Word is a treasure to be mined," Nancy says. "The deeper I go in it, the more I see its wisdom, the more it authenticates itself, the more it reveals to me the amazing mystery of God."
Nancy is the author of six books including Holding on to Hope, The One Year Book of Hope, Hoping for Something Better, Dinner Table Devotions, Hearing Jesus Speak Into Your Sorrow, and When Your Family's Lost a Loved One (co-written with her husband, David). She is also the editor of several anthologies published by Crossway, collections of great writing by noted classic and contemporary Bible teachers and theologians including Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross, Be Still My Soul, and O Love That Will Not Let Me Go.
She is currently working on another book for Tyndale's One Year line that will be One Year of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament.

I'm a parent of 3 who is filled with gratitude for the book "Dinner Table Devotions". I have been doing "formal" devotion books with my kids since the 1st one started kindergarden (now he's a sophmore and my youngest is 10!) I have found that so many of the books lack sound teaching and I have been discouraged by the fact that I've had to correct some of the lessons. We aren't quite done the year but so far every lesson has been a wonderful tool to help my children grow in their faith and understanding. It's filled with sound and solid theological underpinnings that help us talk to the kids about the character of God and the nature of his redemptive plan rather than little moral lessons from Bible characters. I struggle to put my beliefs and faith into clear words that can be understood, this book has helped me do just that every time.

I picked up this book at my local Christian bookstore, half-expecting to be revolted by cheesy cliches. But, wow - not the case. This book is full of well-thought-through TRUTH. NOT catchy, gimmicky, overly-sentimental "fluff."
I HIGHLY recommend this book, especially for families with mixed-ages of children. The book does a great job of addressing young children, while not talking down to high school aged students. I have 1 kindergartener, 1 preschool-aged kid, and a baby, and I expect that we'll begin using this devotional in a year or 2.

I gave this book to my daughter to use with her children at dinner time. On Christmas Eve we joined them for a celebratory feast. After the dessert was cleared they asked if they could do one of the devotionals from Dinner Table Devotions! Out it came as every one gathered around. The oldest daughter (8) got to do all of the reading and did so with enthusiasm. Then came time for the questions. I was amazed at the depth of the questions presented and also at the enjoyment the kids had in answering them! Nancy Guthrie has written an excellent tool for families and it was apparent to me that the children loved it! I was especially glad to see the writing and questions are truly thought provoking and pointed the way to deeper spiritual growth. I would recommend this book to families with children six and older. It is a great tool and something the whole family can enjoy!
