3.0 out of 5 stars Too many puzzles, not enough action
To tell the truth, I bought this game hoping it would be like Resident Evil, only with dinosaurs instead of zombies. In some ways it was; you play as an agent named Regina who gets trapped with her team on an island overrun by dinosaurs. But there were a lot of differences, too. I didn't think the game was as scary as Resident Evil, probably because you hardly ever run...

You and your team are dropped on an island in the ocean searching for a renegade scientist, but something is wrong, there is a large hole in the security fence, the guards have gone walkies and just when things looked like the could'nt get any wierder you are attacked by a very large, very hungry dinosaur, what is going on here? Welcome to the world of Dino Crisis. Dino Crisis is the latest offering from Capcom, the makers of the Resident evil series and although this is evident from the games look at style of play, it is not a bad thing.Resident Evil was the best of its type and Dino crisis is better, the dinosaurs scare the life out of you and are difficult to kill and look frightningly realistic, the puzzles are tough, but not so tough as you're tearing your hair out and flinging your joypad around and for any body who has played any of the resident evil games easy to pick up. This is a game with style, imagination, wit and class, in short it is the game Jurasic park and lost world should have been, another excellent offering from capcom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another resident rip-off, August 3, 2001
By
Poo Poo Pooey (bradford, yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dino Crisis (Video Game)
it would be unfair to pass this game by as another resident evil rip off because, although the basic premise is the same it is actually a very different game in every respect. And with the exception of 2, dino crisis easily excels any of the resident back catalogue.

The graphics are very good and use a different technique than RE allowing for much more user interaction. In RE the graphics are made up of pre-rendered backgrounds but DC uses polygonal characters and backgrounds to better effect and look very much like the areas they are trying to convey. This style of graphics works better than in RE and heightens the tension very well.

The gameplay is more innovative than in the RE games with more puzzles and less emphasis placed on action. DC's weapons are reasonably feeble compared to those in RE but this works for the better. Instead of just splattering every enemy you come across you need to think of alternatives as shooting everything will soon either get you killed or make you run out of ammo fast. Throughout the game you have to use security fences to your advantage, running past a raptor when its back is turned, past a sensor and then turn on the fence, much better than just killing the raptor and more satisfying to boot.

Enemies are also more intelligent than in RE games, as they would need to be, and will chase you through doors and follow your trail of blood. They are all also more agile than those in RE and so those encounters you cannot avoid are made even more visceral.

The use of puzzles through the game is also well done and some are real brainteasers, they are also more inventive than in RE, such as finding the right combination of gases for a poisoned room to gain entry or searching corpses for fingerprints to make a keycard. Much better than RE's simple need key, find key approach.

The enemies in the game is where it starts to slip a bit with not too many variations in there but this isnt much of a problem as dino encounters are not all that frequent anyway. The way the dinos are presented to you is good and the ways you are encouraged to beat them is refreshing. such as guiding a pterodactyl into a fan or electrocuting a raptor.

The main boss, although it hd to be a T-Rex, is better a good alternative to the tyrants in the RE series and provides a constant menace much like in RE3 and always seems to be breathing down your neck. Even when you think youre safe he bursts through a window or finds some way of spoiling your day.

The longevity of the game is pretty much what you expect of a game of this type, a fast play through can take approximately 3 hours but the first time took me about 5 1/2.The game length did surprise me though as at one point i was sure that i had finished the game but i was only half way through.

There is significant replay value in the game with three endings and many different costumes to be unlocked and with the game made in such a way you can play through and experience it differently each time.

Overall there is not much to gripe about with this game and i really cannot find much fault with it at all. Although the game length is expected with this sort of game it can seem annoying to others for it to be over so fast but with MGS the game is so enjoyable that this isnt a problem. Also hardcore blasters may complain about the puzzle orientated gameplay but if you ask me its far better this way.

i'd give it a 95%

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is a dream come true, whether you liked RE or not!, November 12, 1999

This game is a few steps ahead of Resident Evil! The camera angles are improved, and perfected. Some will hopefully be used in future RE games! The FMVs are absolutely amazing. They run perfectly, making the game as realistic as humanly possible. The graphics, sound and music are all great! The graphics really push the Playstation to its limit, but keep it to where it still plays without a problem! The storyline branches at points, making it all that much more enjoyable. The story itslef is absolutely great. The way the saving works could have been made better, but it sure beats the heck out of finding ribbons and typewriters. This game is almost flawless, and I reccomend it to anyone who enjoys RE, or just likes being scared. If you hated RE because of the zombies' slowness, then this is the game for you. The dinosaurs are FAST! You'll like RE more after you've beat this game. Contains life-like graphics, very light language, and extensive gore. Rated mauture; 17+

4.0 out of 5 stars Please use DDK T disks to unlock title of review, August 7, 2003
This review is from: Dino Crisis (Video Game)
As my first forray into the world of survival horror, I was very curious to see how this game would hold up in this age of Playstation 2s and Halo. I am pleased to say that this is a pretty fun game that has its strenghts and weaknesses.

You play as a secret agent named Regina. Your mission is to infiltrate Ibis island to find a mysterious scientest named Dr. Kirk. Upon landing on the island, it quickly becomes obvious that there is something very wrong with the island. Then it becomes a quest to survive the evil reptillian menace.

Many, many people have complained about how dino crisis should be called puzzle crisis. It is true that there is an unusual amount of puzzles in the game that you must solve to advance. They range from simple (switch the batteries) to the moderatly difficult (move the crates with a crane) to the quite difficult (Rotate electronic chips to divert power). There are also a mamoth amount of keys that you must get (Around 50). There are also DDK locks that you have to dechiper to unlock doors (Hence the title of this review). Most of these puzzles can be solved moderatly easily, if you really think about it. Overall, I'd say that the game is a 50/50 mix of puzzles and dinosaur action.

As for the fighting part of the game, you get a total of three weapons, (Shotgun, handgun, and grenade gun) to exterminate raptors, pteradons, etc. Some people might be turned off at the idea of only 3 weapons, but I dont find it a problem. Combat is handled in the RE control scheme, which works pretty well. As with a lot of survival horror games, you have to be carefull as to how you make your way through with ammo, which is not unlimited (Except in 1 case). Fighting the dinosaurs can be difficult, but mastered. Overall, I'd give the combat a B

There are some things to really like about Dino Crisis. At certian points during the game, you have to make decisions aka "Choose your own adventure" style (Do you investigate the underground area, or go save a comrade?). This adds a nice touch of replay value. The graphics are pretty good (By PS1 standards). The best part of the game however, is the T-rex. The T-rex provides the most exciting elements in the game, and each encounter is a adrenaline charged rush. Likewise, the 4 possible different endings are all very exciting and cool to play through, although there are a few things I am curious about. For example, (Spoiler!!!) how can a T-rex swim 30 miles an hour in water? That dosent make much sense. (End Spoiler)

The weak points of the game are mostly the puzzles. There are a bit too many of them, and not enough dino battles. Also, the devlopers throw puzzles at you when you least suspect it, and when you dont want them. While racing to a heliport for example, a big race against time with tense dramatic music, the game tosses a box pushing puzzle that you have to solve to advance. Another time, you have to solve 2 big puzzles in the span of 10 minnutes, where you have to power an elevator, then move cranes when they are only 3 minnutes apart. Also, the unlockable mini-game you earn if you beat the game in under 5 hours, is dissapointing (At least to me). The element of strategy is unwelcome, I just want to blast dinosaurs, and not worry about ammo, and Why isint the T-rex included?

overall, I think that Dino Crisis is a fun game, and a good start to the world of Survival horror. I recomend picking it up if you find it for uner $$$ .

The good:
good graphics

good dino action
good story
Choose your own adventure style branches
The T-rex
4 cool endings

The not so good:
a bit too many puzzles
some really difficult puzzles
not enough dino action
mediocre mini game (See above)

4.0 out of 5 stars Resident Evil anyone?, December 28, 2001

Let me give it to you really short and sweet! Did you like Resident Evil? Then you will like Dino Crisis; it's Resident Evil with dinosaurs. All Capcom did was change the characters and instead of shooting zombies you get to shoot and kill raptors and other dinosaurs that are trying to eat you.
I myself am a fan of Resident Evil so for the price this is a cool game. The same problems from RE come with Dino Crisis however.... lack of ammo!! Besides this it's a fun game, lots of puzzles to figure out and lots of shoot first ask questions later type of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best survival horrors ever made!, June 19, 2002

Hailey Brown (the little cottage on the hill) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dino Crisis (Video Game)
This game may be one of Capcom's best! The detail is picture perfect, with blood splatterd walls and mangled corpses that slowly ebb away your confidence as you continue through the dark facility. This game makes you fear for your life as you get into the feel of it. It is best played in the dark with a wide screen TV to add to the effect. I have never played RE, but I think I will after playing this game. The game can be almost Silent at times, then suddenly you open a door to another room and ghosty music blares, at that point, you know your not the only being in that room as you hear the distincive raptor growl and footsteps racing towards you.
You are on the edge of your seat through the whole game, never knowing what will happen next. You could be walking down a balcony when suddenly, the vibration function kicks in on your controller (if you have that kind, its best if you do) as a gigantic T-rex steps into view. You run towards the nearest door only to find out the door has locked, to your horror, you realise you must keep Mr. Rex at bay as your lucky computer buddy in the control room tries to open the doors.
This is an all-and-out wonderful game with multable endings. I recommend this to gamers who want to give themselves a scare as they have fun at the same time. ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Really terrifying, intelligent dinos, detailed cinimatics, March 27, 2002
This review is from: Dino Crisis (Video Game)
Steven Spielberg proved that Dinosaurs could be menacing and terrorizing and this game only adds to it. This game is similar to Resident Evil (also from Capcom), but more dangerous, because the dinosaurs actually run and jump over things to eat you, unlike sluggish zombies. Rather than stalking screen to screen like with Resident Evil, you can now run through a room and the camera will follow you, making for great chases (Dinosaurs chasing you), but unfortunately this leaves the player at a great disadvantage, because the camera is focused on the player, not the room, so Dinosaurs constantly get the edge lunging onto the screen. A huge plus to the game is the production, because hard work went into making this game and story excellent. The cinematic scenes to start with are of a higher quality and are very detailed, from breezing hair, brushing plant life to seeing the scales on a dinosaur. The dialog is not cheesy or over acted as in other survival horror games. There are nice visual details which no screen shot can show, such as the lighting effects are realistic, a light sources (computer screens, ceiling lights) illuminate on whatever the source hits. An unfortunate detail of this game is that whether you are bitten, clawed or pounced on, you can actually bleed to death without proper medical supplies. Another downfall of the game is that the item screen is not as neat and tidy as Resident Evil's screen. This new system is rather difficult to use. Finally, with the start screen there is no cinematic introduction that will tip anything in the game to the player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has to be one of the best survival-horrors(next to RE2), December 10, 2001
This review is from: Dino Crisis (Video Game)
I loved this game.I like the fact of killing smart and fast dinos alot more than killing stupid, retarded, slow and mindless zombies. It makes the game a little more challenging and this game has so many surprises going from raptors poping out from a corner to rip your face off all the way to a gient T-Rex busting through a window to bite you in half.I must say that this game is very gory but in a way still cannot compare to the goryness of RE games.I bet though that your wondering why I called this one of the best survival-horrors when I have only givin it 4 stars instead of a perfect 5.Well,the game seems to have to much puzzle solving and not enough killing dinos.Like there is about a dino in every hall and in a few rooms but after you kill them all your stuck with about 50 puzzles to open a new area and then you finally get the opportunity to kill a few more dinos and then the same proccess over and over.50 puzzles,10 dinos,50 puzzles,10 dinos. But hey, look on the bright side. The graphics are very great, along with the sound and awesome FMV's and the game also has its great and fun moments like when the T-Rex comes out.In this game the T-Rex plays a simmilar role such as the Nemises does in RE3 because they are both constant enemys that keep showing up to ruin your day and they seem invincable. This annoys some because of the same boss showing up over and over but I think its great!!Plus if you have played RE3 and got annoyed by the Nemises showing up over and over, you may like this a little better because in here the T-Rex does not show up as near asmany times as the Nemises does.Aside from the T-Rex and the Raptors there are 3 other deadly dinos. One is the small and very very annoying Compys, who show up and theres about 20 of them you gota kill which wastes a great deal of your ammo.Anouther is the flying bird dinos(I dont know how to spell there names)and last but not the least, these very very strong and very big(bigger than a raptor anyways but way smaller than the T-Rex)wierd looking things that I do not have a clue to what there names are.Oh,now I would like to get to the ammo.Ammo is very very hard to find in this game, and there is not even that much to find...But I suggest to you to get and infit ammo cheat because you'll need it for this game. This games AI(artificial intellagence)is very good. The dinos are smart and if you are bleeding they can smell it all the way from a different hall and start stalking you.So over all this is a great horror-survival that has (somwhat little)but good action none the less.Buy it,you'll love it(exept if your not good at solving puzzles).
bye now.

Dino Crisis is a GREAT new game out from Capcom. For all you DIE-HARD Resident Evil fans like me, GO NOW and get it! The only draw-back in Dino Crisis is that it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to beat without a guide to help you through those HARD puzzles. Anyways go out and get it, NOW! , you'll thank me after you play it for your first time.

The atmosphere of this game is very much like the movie Jurassic Park. The dinosaurs are vicious and cunning, and the events in the game are well paced so you don't lose interest. There is decent variety in the puzzles, and the game gives you choice points where you can decide whether to skip some puzzles and open numerous cans of whuppass! While I think it falls short of games like Metal Gear Solid in terms of innovation and originality, it is still a great game that will make it hard for you to tear yourself away from the Playstation.
