Kindergarten-Grade 3-Because five-year-old Eric is crazy about dinosaurs, his peers and family call him the Dino Expert. One day, while playing with his friend Sam, he mistakes a great blue heron for a flying Pteranodon. "'Some Dino Expert you are,'" says Sam. The putdown saddens Eric for a while, until his mother explains to him the theory connecting birds with dinosaurs in the minds of some paleontologists. This revives his spirits, and he holds forth on the dino/ bird connection to the town librarian and to his friend. The sprightly, red-headed Eric, African-American Sam, patient Mrs. Williams, and Eric's parents are all likable, middle-class characters. The watercolor illustrations are humorous and lively. A note for parents and teachers is included. A good choice for the Jurassic Park gift shop!-Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, VA
