In terms of installation and ease of use, this gets 5 stars. I was up and running in less than 2 minutes.

In terms of build quality, I would also give it 5 starts. The construction feels solid and professional; in other words not toy like.

However, this item has no focus mechanism (auto or manual). This mean that at high magnification (beyond about 50x), you need to make VERY fine movements to bring something into focus. In most situations, this is practically impossible, making the item pretty useless beyond 50-75x. And if that's all you need, there are plenty of options at one-third the price. For this reason, I returned the item, and give this 3 stars.

Dino-Lite Digital Microscope (USB2.0) 10x~200x Magnification

I order this product after returning a less expensive one that came with a mini-CD that won't work with Macs, and no opportunity to download driver from Mfg.

If you enjoyed microscopes as a child, but endured the frustration of getting focus and light exactly right--this is for you. My grandchildren can hold the device, the LED lights are integral, and the focus adjusting is a one-handed affair. The images pop up in real time on the screen for all to see, and can be saved as robust PNG images (crisper than JPEG but just as easy to move around). We capture dead things, live things, you name it. Photos, videos, time-lapse. Expensive, but a never tiring tool to investigate anything. This was a great departure from the usual electronic gift, and has spawned interest from diamonds to worms!

I purchased this product to make microscopic images of products my company makes. I found it to be a breeze to install on my computer and very easy to manipulate and use. The Dino-Lite makes great photographs and is usefull for limited analysis. My only reservation is that this particular model does not include a measuring tool. I recommend the product for lite business use as well as an excellent tool for students from middle school through High School.

Allows me to see the smallest of details on a worn coin. What would otherwise be unreadable becomes clear and bright

I use Dino-Lite for inspecting small machined parts. The LED illumination on this unit has only two levels: Too bright and off. My previous device had a range of levels which I greatly miss.

I bought the dino lite AM311S about a year ago. None of my three laptops can run it, even though i was using powered USB 2.0 ports. They are all three different brands. The company notified me, (I am not kidding) that I had "bought the wrong laptop. This means it is NOT PORTABLE.
It ran nicely on my (gasp) VISTA desk top, but failed completely today after at most an hour's total actual use. It flashes briefly when I plug it in, then goes dark. The computer can no longer see the hardware, and a re-instal didn't work. Same result when I plugged it into another desk top.
In short, it lasted for less operatime than the install time took.

Disregard all the old 2008 reviews on Amazon.

This Dino-Lite will work with Windows 7, Vista, XP and OS/X. The drivers and application can be found at [...]

Again, all of the reviews for this device are VERY old and Dino-Lite is owned by a different company that constantly update their drivers and software.

This device is not a toy, rather, it is manufactured by the same company that manufactures microscopes and digital microscopic devices for doctors and hospitals.

I got this product for Christmas and I love it. It's lots of fun and very interesting. to use. It makes salt granules look like big ice cubes and my finger prints look like valleys in the desert. Now I can be my own Doctor,(Kidding). I can definitely see where this item can be a very useful tool for Doctors and Dermatologists. It's fantastic and your imagination is the limit. Go buy one, examine the tiny world that lives on leaves and in your backyard. Extremely versatile too.

Worked flawlessly on mac running mountain lion. I was only surprised that you can't dial in magnification/focus separately. This results in being able to see things basically at two levels: Really Close and REALLY REALLY close! Much cheaper option than buying traditional telescope and excellent quality imaging. On mac works instantly plus the software download from the site installed flawlessly.
