5.0 out of 5 stars I'd recommend it for children and science geeks of all ages!, March 22, 2009
This review is from: Dino-Lite Portable Tabletop Digital Microscope / Camera USB 2.0 (Office Product)
I've wanted a USB microscope for a long time, and received this as a birthday gift from my boyfriend. Normally I'd write something listing the pros and cons, but I really can't find anything I don't like about it. The only 2 things I can imagine causing dissatisfaction from someone is that the 3 lenses have a range of magnification, so you don't always know exactly what magnification your using. You'll know it's between 100x and 200x or between 400x and 600x. The company seems somewhat obscure, which caused my significant some worry until we set it up, and it doesn't really look high tech, more like a plastic UFO.

However, the functionality is awesome. It has higher magnification than a lot of other similarly priced USB microscopes, and since it omits the eyepiece in favor of a straight to computer camera connection, there is no eye strain. There are a few settings for image resolution, with it topping out at 1280 x 1024. There is also a video and time lapse option I haven't played with too extensively. The image quality is also very satisfying, and there are 2 sets of LEDS which can be used together or separate, by toggle buttons mounted on the back.

Despite the bad English in the manual, the setup was really easy and the software is also incredibly easy to use. The foot print is also nice and compact, at 4x5 inches.

When changing from one lens to the other, you must pull down slightly on the lens mount. It does not feel flimsy but I can imagine this could be an issue if children are using it, and they may need supervision or help.
