Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

“Ten striding velociraptors (and one looming predator).” So begins this countdown book that includes both the familiar (Tyrannosaurus) and unfamiliar (Parasaurolophus) and demands careful discrimination between such similar types as Deinosuchus and Deinonychus. Delightfully colorful verbs describe the dinosaurs’ actions (lazing, soaring, lumbering) and introduce scientific concepts (“munching herbivores”). Illustrated in earth tones, the dinosaurs are in all manners of striped and polka-dotted patterns, subtly emphasizing that no one really knows what dinosaurs’ colors were. Stark against clean white backgrounds, the animals are easy to count. Two spreads even introduce addition: “Seven sauntering parasaurolophus (and what’s that flying overhead?).” With the clever inclusion of zero, Oldland both emphasizes an important mathematical concept and the scientific concept of extinction. A worthy addition to the dinosaur collection. But here’s a tip: before storytime, adults will want to check out the pronunciation key at the end of the book. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Patricia Austin

Review

"This title works as a concept book about counting and as a nonthreatening intro to dinos." --School Library Journal

I received a copy of this book for my Grandchildren at the PNBA.
reviewers: Isabel, age 5
Grammy, age old

Isabel said:
It's a little kids book with cartoon dinosaurs. They do not look real and they are not scary.

It is a counting book. I know all those numbers. I could only read a few words on my own. I knew most of the dinosaurs. I learned lots of new words like lumbering and towering.

I liked the book and want to give it to Miles.

Grammy said:
It amazes me to have a child pick up a dinosaur book and point out Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, Pterodactyl, and Stegosaurus even when the images are more cartoon cute then accurate.

Isabel is entering 1st grade next year and can pick out some of the words in the text. However, the action words.. ie.. striding, sauntering, lumbering, looming.. meant we had to do show and talk after reading the book. She can now show what a saunter is and her towering is totally awesome...

We also took time to discuss predator, herbivore, carnivore and, although not mentioned in the book, omnivore.

I appreciate the pronunciation guide at the back of book. I enjoyed the action words, even if unusual, as they did reflect the images and did give Isabel and me "playtime" action as we also lumbered and loomed around the store.

The thing that got this book a review was the inclusion of 0. Do I hear mathematicians applauding?

My daughters are pretty big on dinosaurs thanks to Dinosaur train and several visits to see the amazing Paleontology Hall at Houston's Museum of Nature and Science. When I was offered the chance to review Dinosaur countdown, by Nicholas Oldman, we were pretty excited. I read through it first and was impressed; it includes some of the less well known dinosaurs as well as the favorites like T-rex. The dinosaurs are painted in bright fall themed colors which look good against the white background. DD is 3 and really into counting books and Dinos so I thought she would want to read it over and over. Unfortunately she just wasn't that into it. Big sis, 7 (who isn't really the target audience) liked that she learnt a few new Dinosaurs and liked the illustrations. I can imagine there will be many Pre-K dino fans out there that will love this book, I would have picked it up as a gift for my nephew if he was still that age (he probably wouldn't appreciate it now that he is 12). This review was originally posted on my blog Learning & Growing the Piwi Way.

I was sent 'Dinosaur countdown' in exchange for an honest review which has been submitted to Kids can press via Netgalley.com. I will not receive any monetary compensation from the publisher or Netgalley.

This preschool counting book satisfied the dinosaur lovers in my family! The pictures are delightful (and, according to my resident dinosaur expert, accurate enough to pass muster) and the countdown rhyme is very cute. My favourite thing, though, is that it includes zero. Not enough counting books include zero! It shows dinosaur bones with "zero dinosaurs" because they're extinct, silly. Love it!

I read Dinosaur Countdown by Nicolas Oldland, in exchange for review from Netgalley.com. The book was published by Kids Can Press. The book taught kids how to count backwards from 10 to 1, using dinosaurs as visuals. The book as a simple format/layout. White background with dinosaurs in the foreground. Love this book. read it to my boys.
