Lets Make a Deal!

Mike and his little brother, Andy, are headed for the Dinosaur Card Trading Fair. They're ready to wheel and deal. It's, 4 Stegosaurus for 1 Triceratops, and 2 Triceratops for 1 Allosaurus. But can they get what they really want: the tremendous, gigantic, ferocious, Tyrannosaurus rex?

The math concept of equivalency -- understanding when values are equal -- is introduced in this fast-paced story as two brothers try to beat the clock and make the ultimate trade.

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-Using dinosaur trading cards as a theme, Murphy explores the concept of equivalent values. Mike and his brother, Andy, go to a trading fair in hopes of finding a Tyrannosaurus rex card. By making various trades they are successful in getting the coveted item. The story contains just the right amount of tension as well as tidbits of dinosaur facts interspersed among the math concepts. Colorful pictures of enthusiastic traders in dinosaur masks and hats add interest. A concluding page gives suggestions of various math activities that correlate with the book. Teachers and students alike will find this one a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars wheeling and dealing, May 28, 2010
This is a great book for showing fair trades of unequal items. Different people value different cards, and the brothers trade up, always going for that elusive T.Rex card.

Awesome family dynamics -- that's one of the best things about Stuart J. Murphy. His books always teach the math concepts very clearly and concretely (and memorably!)

ps -- this is a great book for explaining about basic economies, like in frontier towns. If people are paying the doctor in chickens, or paying the teacher with free room and board, are those good equivalents?
