PreS–This book is the third in a series of rhyming books to introduce youngsters to the Jewish holidays. This time, the dino arrives to inform the children that Shabbat is near so they must prepare for the weekly observance. He spills some wine on the tablecloth, falls asleep in synagogue, and generally behaves like a mischievous toddler, while clearly enjoying every part of the rituals. The inclusion of the Havdalah is especially welcome. The colorful and large illustrations are appealing and will be helpful at storytime. This book is the best of the series and will be heavily used by teachers in Jewish preschools. However, for schools without large Jewish populations, stick with the others in the series for a taste of mainstream Jewish tradition.–Lisa Silverman, Sinai Temple Library, Los Angeles

Dinosaur on Shabbat,

The friendly, oversized dinosaur from Dinosaur on Hanukkah and Dinosaur on Passover, returns to celebrate Shabbat with a young boy and his contemporary family. In silly, rhyming text, Dino tries to help with Shabbat preparations: setting the table, lighting the candles, pouring the wine, and blessing the challah. He also joins the family in the synagogue on Shabbat morning and participates in Havdalah. As in the past, his size, enthusiasm, and clumsiness create havoc, but "when Shabbat is over Dino leaves without a fuss. But I know next Friday he'll be back to share Shabbat with us." The illustrations complement the fun and cheery mood of the text, but are a bit inconsistent. For example, the text refers to a white tablecloth while the illustration appears in blue, and Dino sometimes wears a baseball cap but at other times (like in synagogue) his head is bare. A brief end note explains Shabbat, however, there would be added value if it included the lyrics and music to "The Dinosaur Song" (There's a dinosaur knocking at my door, knocking one, two, three . . . there's a dinosaur knocking at my door and he wants to spend Shabbat with me . . .) - a natural pairing for a pre-school storytime program. Great Toddler Shabbos Book!,

Our two and a half year old daughter loves this book so much that I had to find a gaint dinosaur to invite to Shabbos dinner. I found a four foot inflatable one that we dressed up in my husband's green shirt and a tie (because that's what the dinosaur wears in the story). Now, every Friday before we light candles, we read the story and then we hear someone knocking. We go open the front door to find dino there! He sleeps in my daughter's room and disappears after she goes to sleep Saturday night (after Shabbos is over). He returns again the following Shabbos, after spending the week with his family (the mommy and daddy dinosaurs). I highly recommend this book.

My 3-1/2 year old loves this book and we read it all the time (over and over and over again!). It has familiarized him with the customs of Shabbat on another level. The rhyming is fun and the pictures are cute. It is best suited for kids up to about 6 or 7 years old.
