Editorial Reviews

Review

David Read offers some fresh insights on the topic of dinosaurs. His work will assist Creationists in interpreting their position with some new ideas. I anticipate that this work will be of great help to Christian teachers in their effort to explain to young minds the work of God in creation and the direction the science of evolution is attempting to take science education. The book is a must for any Christian science teacher. It is excellent material for preparing young minds to deal with questions of where these creatures came from and why they no longer exist. --Donald R. Sahly, Ed.D., Former President, Southern Adventist University, Southwestern Adventist University

It is my strong conviction that this book should be made available to Seventh-day Adventists and the public. It is well-written, interesting and there is ample evidence of research and a scholarly approach. It contains evidence of sound reasoning and is both faith and confidence building in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. --Neal C. Wilson, Retired President, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
Lawyers have long played a significant role in the conflict over origins. I think I understand why this is so. For lawyers, everything hangs in the argument, and when a lawyer sees an argument, he analyzes it for logical flaws, as wells as hidden premises and assumptions that may be wrong, or at least arguable.

When I heard that another lawyer was writing a book about dinosaurs, I was at first skeptical. What can a lawyer know about dinosaurs in particular, and science in general that would qualify him to write such a book?

I soon found out the answer. He knows a great deal. David Read has qualified himself for this daunting task by digging deeply into the fundamentals of not only science as a discipline, and dinosaurs in particular, but he also displays extensive knowledge of geology and paleontology. He has assembled the issues in a logical and insightful manner. He presents his subjects with the skill of a good prosecuting attorney. There is no possibility of a hung jury in this case.

I recommend his book as an excellent and timely source of information, not only for the facts concerning the controversy on origins, but as a good introduction to the dinosaurs as well. -- --Arthur Chadwick, Ph.D., Professor of Biology and Geology, Southwestern Adventist University

--Neal C. Wilson, Retired President, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists

In your article David Read makes this statement, "Science has answers to these questions, but science is guided by a godless philosophy." That begs the question whether science and Christian teaching are anti-types? It would be much more correct to say, "Evolution science (or scientists) state that, while Design science (or scientists) state that..." My father-in-law was a scientist for 30 years, Chairman of the Biology Department. He studied everything from ornithology to the use of the electron-microscope. He was a true scientist. Science uses clear methodology to prove or disprove theories, but it has severe limitations. Science cannot explain creation by God any more than we can. Let us not confuse our readers with incorrect terms!

Absolutely loving it! Without a doubt for the layman, written in a journalistic investigative style; it is nonetheless very scientific and well documented. It takes on more of a narrative and does deal with "Adventist" ideology, but that ideology is much in harmony with conservative Christianity...especially old school baptists & southern Church of Christ, and Pentecostals. Take it for what it's worth! I'm Adventist, but I've learned volumes from Lee Strobal, Luther, Calvin, intelligent design theorists, Thomas Jefferson, ....hell even atheists! Take it for what it's worth and if you're wanting to know more about creationism, this will be the best 38 dollars you've ever spent!

Read this book, what the author fails to mention is that dinosaur-like creatures have been seen through out the centuries like the mokele mbembe in the congo area which resembles a small brontosaurus,if the flood was to wipe them out then why are they still around? I`m an SDA but I have issues with the claims of Ellen G. White, this book is more about her than the bible itself,I advise the author to check into the many sightings of dinosaurs in history before saying they were dna experiments by the ancients.

The title of this book is misleading. It is much more than a discussion of dinosaurs, although this writer seems to know as much about them as anyone. It also addresses many of the broader, basic issues in the creation/evolution debate, and while written from an Adventist perspective, as the title itself indicates, contains much information that will be of interest to other readers who want "the other side" of the evolution story - the science often conveniently overlooked by proponents of evolution. Well written and well argued, as we would expect from a lawyer. And worth reading twice, since it contains a massive ammount of data.

This book is appropriately subtitled since the "Adventist View" given will only be comprehensible by a subset of Seventh Day Adventists who believe in the inerrency of both the canon and the writing of the Adventist prophet Ellen G White.
This book is apologetic, written for a lay audience and lacks the documentations expected of a work of scholarship. There is not the portrayal of the 2 positions expected in a scholarly work. It is written in a "they say, but I tell you" style with alternating chapters where the scientific consensus is given, superficially but mostly accurately, and then the "Adventist" view is given with partisan recouching and trivializing of the scientific view. Most the references are to books biased to the creationist literature which forms a vanishingly small fraction of the primary literature on dinosaurs. Where original scientific literature is cited it is mostly through the citation of others who have cited the original. Hearsay.
In chapter 6 on the the ability of a Christian to accept Darwinian mechanisms and in chapter 26 on choice of paradigms a case is made for choosing divine revelation over the scientific process of explanation of the natural world on the basis of natural process and law. Further the premise of this book is not at all nuanced and assumes you must either believe in divine revelation alone or accept naturalistic understandings and logically reject God. The evidentiary basis for his fideist position is never adequately established and it remains "God said it I believe it" without examining the basis or mechanism for knowing how God said it. One is expected to accept this as an axiom.
There are some peculiar views that almost all Adventist scientists would now likely reject.
