sadly this is Jim's last album. He died recently. It's the music of an elder
southern gentleman with all the roots he had. It's no new Sound or something like that, You remember "Spectrum meets Captain Memphis - Indian Giver", which thrilled me for it's ruff sound. On the last album all is smoothy and oldfashioned. IT's a nice last statement of Jim Dickinson.

Roll with Dickinson,

Going to the well is how you find the good water. Buy Jim Dickinson's music, and drink deep and long, and you'll feel what I mean. His UbuRoi-ness irony was always the hallmark of what makes him very different.

This is a bit of a departure from the often stylistically eclectic albums James Luther Dickinson has previously released. With a live-in-the-studio ambience, Dickinson's swan song is a relatively quiet collection of non originals featuring piano, bass and drums. The delivery style and song selection celebrates JLD's own musical roots: honky tonk, rockabilly, and American songbook jazz.
The first album, Dixie Fried, and this c.d., Dinosaurs Run in Circles, encompass the man perfectly. |
