Book Description

7 and up2 and up
FROM A CONIFER oasis to a steamy rain forest to a volcano-devastated river bank, the pop-up dioramas in this unique, freestanding carousel book capture the changing atmosphere and dinosaurs of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous eras, the three periods that make up the Age of Dinosaurs. Over 15 species of dinosaur, archosaur, marine reptile, and pterosaur are featured—from well-known creatures like T. Rex, Triceratops, and Diplodocus to lesser known ones like Rutiodon, Placerias, and Stygimoloch—in eyepopping, museum-quality illustrations by renowned paleoartist Luis V. Rey. Complete with a 24-page booklet providing background information on the environment and animals in each diorama, Dinosaurs in the Round will enchant young readers and make the changing face of our planet come alive.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—Here the covers open and tie back to reveal three scenes, each of which is a 3-D dino-diorama thickly populated with toothy predators and well-armored prey amid lush greenery. Rey's brightly hued, actively posed pop-up figures are also reproduced (though more fuzzily) in an accompanying booklet that fits securely into a pocket and itself opens to a standard two-dimensional overview of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods on land, along with glimpses of ocean dwellers and notes on dinosaur eggs, fossil formation, and mass extinctions. There is some chowing down but no actual gore in sight, and paper-engineer Williams creates an unusual effect by layering a sheet of clear acetate into one scene to represent the surface of a lake or stream. Eye-catching visuals compensate for the routine text.—John Peters, New York Public Library

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique even by pop-up book standards!, October 27, 2010
This review is from: Dinosaurs in the Round (Hardcover)
I think Jay-net missed something in his/her review. The book is sub-titled "in the round" and it comes with satin ties. The point is to open the book bringing the front and back covers 180 degrees and tie the ties! What you then have is a three-sided and three-dimensional diorama. I think it's neat! It's NOT in the traditional Pop-Up vain.

1.0 out of 5 stars 3 HARD TO OPEN PAGES!, January 16, 2009
This review is from: Dinosaurs in the Round (Hardcover)
3 scenes is all you get and the book is so poorly constructed that the pages won't fully open. Complete disappointment. This is one pop-up that I don't mind letting the baby destroy.
