the diplomats first offcial(after the 4 diplomats mixtapes) debut album is reasonably good. juelz santana, cam'ron and jimmy jones dont really make a big impact with their lyrics, which are sometimes boring and repetitive (see the track "juelz santana the great", i dont see whats so great about him to be honest). it is quite a consistant album throughout tho, it being a double cd also, which was abit of a gamble on the fact that roc-a-fellas other double cd, jay-z's "blueprint 2", didnt do so well. the best thing about this album though is the production. its consistant throughout the whole album, with the typical speeded up samples that have been heard of cam'rons last album. just blaze produces the best tracks on here ("dipset anthem", "built this city") but heatmakerz also bring some good production to it. standout tracks would be "ground zero", "beautiful noise", "dipset anthem", "i really mean it", "purple haze", "the first" and "built this city". if they released this album on maybe one disc it would be alot better, and even a instrumental version maybe a good idea. if u liked cam'rons last album "come home with me" then you would definatly like this, but also if u like nice production this would also be a good buy. id give this album 3.5.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Diplomats- Diplomatic Immunity, April 8, 2003
This review is from: Diplomatic Immunity (Audio CD)
The Diplomats (Cam'ron, Juelz Santana,Jimmy Jones, Freeky Zeeky) first group album "Diplomatic Immunity" has some banging tunes. Exectuive Produced by Cameron, and Jimmy Jones, guest appearances come from Un Casa, Toya, Hell Rell, Freeway, DMX, and Master P. Two discs, first has ten tracks with five interludes, second has twelve tracks. Find lots of sampling of old school recordings throughout, and album is laced with really sick beats courtesy of Roccafella. First standout track for me is "Who Am I" which uses a O'Jays sample, Juelz drops some nice and memorable verses on this one, a reflective track. Followed up by "Ground Zero" a banging track, where diplomats rep. "More Than Music" and "Dipset Anthem" are two more tracks that follow both are good. Then there is the "Hey Ma (Remix)" feat. Toya, at first I thought this was just going to be a filler track, but its actually a hot track, remix as good if not better then the original. Disc Two has some hot tracks, ones that stood out for me are: "I Love You" a track about the hood, 9/11, and showing love to lost friends. "Purple Haze" and the "The First" follow, both are ill, Killa Cam going solo on the first one. "Whats Really Good" feat. DMX is disappointing, as you expect X to drop more then one line. Fortunately "Im Ready" picks things up again, and is followed by "Bout it, Bout it" feat. Master P, this was the first track I saw come out on video, and though I havnt felt P in a long long time, actually like this track, it has got a distinct sound to it. "We Built This City" is a blazing hot fast paced, adrenaline laced track, loving it right now. Album finishes with "Let's Go" which samples Marvin Gaye, a nice closer, for a solid album. Where does this album fall short, too many interludes, and a few average tracks, could have easily been one album. All the same, I am happy to have "Diplomatic Immunity" in the collection, nice first release from one of hiphops foremost up and coming groups.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now that's powerful music man! 4.5 stars!, April 23, 2003
This review is from: Diplomatic Immunity (Audio CD)
I don't understand why a lot of people hate on Cam'ron and his crew...these guys are the hottest thing out right now and they keep it straight blazin'! This album is definitely one of the hottest releases out in 2003 thus far and is one of the hottest debut albums hip-hop has seen in a long time. The production from the Heatmakerz, Just Blaze, Kayne West, DR Period, Spike n' Jamahl, and Charlemagne is off the charts, but the Heatmakerz definitely steal the show with their catchy old school samples from artists like Marvin Gaye to Barbra Mason. I admit, lyrically, the Dipset isn't the greatest, but when they flow over the Heatmakerz tracks, they spit nothin but fire (and if you're like me who copped this album on vinyl, the fire will melt the wax no doubt). Without a doubt, the best tracks on this album are "Who I Am," "Real N*ggas," "More Than Music," "Beautiful Noise," "I Really Mean It," "My Love, "I Love You," "Purple Haze," "The First," "Juelz Santana The Great," "DJ Enuff Freestyle," "I'm Ready," and "Let's Go." There are some interludes (skits) on the 2-disc record, most of which aren't that great, but the skits to peep are "Have You Seen Juelz Santana" (that skit is laughs) and the Hell Rell Interludes & Freestyles (this man can spit fire). All in all, this album is definitely one of my favorites right now and I'm gonna spin it until it gets lost in time. GO FEEL THIS HEAT!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars ONE BIG DISSAPOINTMENT, September 14, 2003
This review is from: Diplomatic Immunity (Audio CD)
FIRST OF ALL, 2 CDS IS WAY TOO MUCH FOR A DEBUT ALBUM. MUCH OF THIS ALBUM IS JUST AVERAGE EVERYDAY NEW YORK RAP. AS ALWAYS, CAM'RON IS FUN TO LISTEN TO, BUT THE REST OF THE DIPLOMATS[EXCEPT FOR MAYBE JUELZ SANTANA] IS WACK. THE HIGH POINTS OF THIS ALBUM IS ''UN CASA'', WHICH IS THE 1ST SONG ON THE ALBUM. IT INTRODUCES ROC-A-FELLA'S NEWEST RAPPER, AND I MUST SAY, UN CASA RIPPED IT ON THAT TRACK. THEN THERE'S ''GROUND ZERO'', WHICH IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE BEST SONG ON THE WHOLE ALBUM. THEN THERE'S OF COURSE ''DIPSET ANTHEM'' WHICH HAS A HOT BEAT AND SOME NICE FLOWS FROM THE DIPLOMATS. THEN THERE'S THE 3RD ''BOUT IT BOUT IT'', WHICH IS SLOW, BUT INTERESTING. AND THEN THERE'S ''BUILT THIS CITY'', WHICH RIGHT NEXT TO ''GROUND ZERO'', ONE OF THE BEST SONGS ON THE ENTIRE ALBUM. BUT WHAT HURTS THIS ALBUM IS THE FACT THAT IT'S 2 DISCS. IT'S SIMPLY JUST TOO LONG AND HAS TOO MUCH UNESSECARY MATERIAL. THIS MIGHT HAVE WORKED OUT A LOT BETTER HAD IT BEEN JUST 1 DISC. MAYBE ON THEIR NEXT ALBUM, THE DIPLOMATS'LL LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES THEY MADE WITH THIS ALBUM.

This is one of the better group rap albums I have seen in the past few years. The fast pace beats are matched with interesting samples...2 of which are from the O' Jays. Bottom Line: I bought this double album at the record store for 10 bucks...get it b4 the prices rise! Hot tracks Disc 1: "Who I am", Real Ni***s, Beautiful Noise", "Dipset Anthem", And all tracks with Hell Rell. Hot Tracks Disc 2: "My Love", "DJ Enuff Freestyle", and "Lets Go"

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the Worst Rap Albums In the Decade., August 9, 2003

To Roc-A-Fella 4 Life

First of all I'd like to state that despite the group being the "Diplomats"...there is not one bit of political push on the album what so ever. All there is is clichéd refrences about killing and being on "the block"

That's great that you're in love with this record label...but these guys are the worst rappers ever...they remind me of vanilla ice. Taking sample after sample, destroying great songs, and even when you are feelin' a sped up sample-which can't be any further than track 3 because they're all the same-these [imitators] rap by yelling at a low volume with no flow what-so-ever. And as for lyrics...well, I let you have a look for yourslef...

From "Who I Am"
"No oil and hot water, just boiling hot water
Cooking coke, to the oil and hot water"
-Well let me count...no oil? anyways, ohh, water rhymes three times together. These guys have some serious talent (sarcasm heavy)

From "Bout It Bout It"
"I represent, where them killers at
145th and Broadway you get your head cracked
Get your legs snapped, arm trist, ribs cracked"

-No, I'm sorry, but the word "cracked" was already used. This cd has more recycling of the same word in the same bar I wouldn't of believed it, had I not boughten it.

From "We Built This City"
***first of all...you built the city on rock and roll??? Hm, 'cause I thought you were rappers***

"Yo my dip set taliban
We on these streets, like the war on them streets of Afghanistan"

-My first question...my dip set taliban? does this make sense? And a statement I'd like to make...I figured out taliban and afghanistan ryhmed back in 2001...and thought nothing of it. Now these 'diplomats' think they're 'cool' because they've figured it out.

From "What I Do"
"I took over blocks, and put dope and coke on 'em
Send playaz out, and put them under my deodorant
Just like my Speed Stick playa, I see chips quicker"

-come on...send people out, and put them under my deodorant? what are you talking about? Just like speed stick, I see chips quicker? Ok, this may be some bizarre connection I'm not seeing here...but it's really messed up.
And since when does ''em' rhyme with 'deodorant'? What? Oh yeah, it doesn't.

And furthermore, taking a sample from Marvin Gaye's "let's get it on" you'd think it'd be about sex or women...right?
Wrong. Let's review ...
"Yeah it's me from the block
Quick to tell a playa' (Let's get it on)
But I don't really like to beef on the block
That bring heat to the block
I got ta' eat on the block playa' (Let's get it on)
Yeah you dealin' with a pimp from the hood
Keep a chick from the hood
Quick to tell her aye..."

My God.

So in review...this album is the work of what, 4 or 5 or who ... cares, terrible people who think they're artists...all working together to create the worst cd in history. Not only did all the clichéd rappers work together, they managed to put out TWO cd's! Can it get much worse...well, probably not. ...

2.0 out of 5 stars What's Really Good....Definitely Not This Album (2 Stars), May 18, 2004
This review is from: Diplomatic Immunity (Audio CD)
If you just want beats, then this CD might do the job if you're into sped up soul samples and sped up 80's hits. Really, even the beats get boring after a while because they are so predictable. This would've been a pretty hot album if 80% of it wasn't filler. There's a reason why this double disc was the same price as one CD. There are a few hot joints. On "Bout It Bout It Part III", Master P outshines Cam and Jimmy Jones. Even though the verse was classic P (damn, I miss the old P), the fact that he had the hottest verse speaks volumes. The hot joints are few and far in between and I'm not even gonna get into the lyrics. I'll just say that my 6 year old nephew could write better rhymes than most of these cats. On "Beautiful Music, Cam'ron spits: "I bring hammers to to the gun fight / one night stand / I'm only standin' for one night...." That's just wack......period. It's sad that their hottest rapper is locked up (Hell Rell). And does Freaky Zeeky even rap? And the interludes are predictable and just plain ol' corny. A lot of this could have been chopped down to one album to save us all the exercise our fingers got from skipping songs. Out of 27 songs, there are only about 7 hot joints on the two discs put together. The only reason I rated this album as high as I did is because of the beats. Like I said, the beats are hot, but even those get boring after a while. Download this album instead of buying it. It's not worth the money no matter how little you pay for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars [bad], April 13, 2004
This review is from: Diplomatic Immunity (Audio CD)
I have to admit Cam'ron's first album was tight. But, in the past years now that he has joined with Juelez Santana, he has really gone to [bad]. I did like one thing from the album, the beats. It sounds good on the system and the bass is thumpin. But, the lyrics are the worst lyrics i have ever heard in my entire life. I really can't believe this dude used to do joints with Big L. It is like a first grader wrote the lyrics for them. If you like [bad] lyrics and repetition this is your [bad]. I strongly suggest that you don't buy this album and if you have it already, smash that [bad]. Its a disgrace to rap.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst double lp ever.......seriously, October 6, 2003
By
The Gifted One (Charlotte, North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Diplomatic Immunity (Audio CD)
First off, what made these guys think they could release a double LP??? In the past only the best of the best could pull off a good double LP. Biggie, Pac, Wu-Tang, and Jigga all made pretty good double LPs but the Diplomats???

To start off, before listening to this LP you should realize that Cam'ron and his Diplomats have NO LYRICAL CONTENT OR FLOW WHATSOEVER!!! Now let me explain to you why I say what I say about this album.

Cam'ron on Bout it Bout it pt. 3 - "Baby mack baby gat love the way the baby/Got my baby boo, cop the X5, that's a baby truck"
Now in only 2 lines he says baby 4 times.

What kind of (...) is that?? Not to mention that Bout it Bout it 3 has one of the most annoying beats you've ever heard. Most of the other tracks on the album however, are blessed with pretty good production. Heatmakerz wasted a lot of good beats on the Dipset.

A verse from Juelz Santana on Gangsta Music - Now I see death around the corner
Gotta stay high, will I survive in the city where the skinny niggas die?
Nope, it's the city where the skinny niggas ride
.45 semi on the side, twisting when they drive, yeah
Lick a shot for Big Pop and 'Pac, yeah
One more for Shyne locked inside, yeah
Two more for Cam, for taking over the Roc

Now if I'm not mistaken the beginning of that verse is the same thing Jay said on "A Diamond is Forever" off the Blueprint 2. Who said a garbage mc like Juelz had the right to borrow Jay's rhymes? Look at the content of that verse....no lyrical value at all. Why do the Diplomats repeat the same word at the end of each line over and over? And how has Cam taken over the Roc when he has some of the weakest lyrics of anybody on the Roc??The sad thing is that you can expect more of those type of lyrics all over both cds. There are only about 2 good tracks on this entire double cd and those are Dipset Anthem and I Really Mean it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND that you buy this album. You're better off to d/l the 2 good tracks, i wouldn't even bother bootlegging this album. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this LP. A lot of my friends were acting like it was hot so I went out and bought it. I was angry because I could have saved that $16.99 for some other album. I kept listening to it over and over trying to find out what my friends saw in this album but to no avail. I would rather buy two blank cds than this. This is one of those albums that you must AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Dipset aren't even that good at making party tracks. I'd recommend Lil' Jon or the Ying Yang twins over them if you want some party music. Right now Cam and his Dipset are the worst rappers on the Roc and I hope they come correct on their next LP.
