I was afforded the opportunity to read an advanced copy of "Dippin My Spoon". I enjoyed this book so much I read entire book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. The character,Amber LaReaux, came to life on the pages of this book. I found myself experiencing pain, disappointment, fear and happiness with this character. The villians in this carefully woven plot were invisible until the surprising ending. I really picked the wrong one. Bravo Nina Foxx! When is your next book?

THE MEN IN HER LIFE WERE SO OBVIOUS, HOW AS A COUNSELOR SHE COULD NOT SEE THESE UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS SHE WAS IN? CHE WAS ANOTHER, WITH A "FRIEND" LIKE THAT...WHO NEEDS ENEMIES. I WAITED AND WAITED FOR THIS BOOK TO GO SOMEWHERE BUT IT LEFT ME HANGIN'. THE DIPPIN' SPOON HERE IS A PLASTIC ONE. THIS IS NOT A GOOD READ UNLESS YOU LIKE TO SEE SOMEONE MAKE THE WRONG CHIOCES OVER AND OVER WITH NO PRODUCTIVE END RESULT.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ummm, December 4, 2000
This review is from: Dippin' My Spoon (Paperback)
I picked this book up b/c this was a new sister on the block, she has Sisterlocks and I thought the title was amusing. Instead of Dippin my Spoon this should have been called Stick me with a fork I'm done.

The character Amber got on my nerves, she was docile, and very naive, but then she had a scandelous friend and a wacko husband who she should have left long b4 she actually did. I am still trying to figure out what this book was about.

I would not read it again, would I recommend it, umm I don't think so, would I tell someone about it, if they just wanted to read anything yes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dippin' My Spoon A Literary Feast, September 26, 2000

I enjoyed this Book!!! Dippin' My Spoon was hilarious and intriguing. I liked reading about all the complex relationships that Amber found herself involved in. My favorite love/hate relationship was Amber and Che'. Reading about these two made me question Amber's judgement. This type of relationship is much too common in real life. The information that was revealed near the end was very surprising! However;it added to the essence of the novel. It was pleasurable reading this book from cover to cover. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Foxx comes out with next. May God continue to Bless you Ms. Foxx.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!, May 28, 2002

This review is from: Dippin' My Spoon (Paperback)
I got this book as one of my 3 free from Black Expressions book club. Never heard of the author before, and the subject seemed interesting. As I was reading this book, I wondered, just what institution gave this lady her degree??!! I thought I must have received a bad copy because no published book could have this many grammatical errors or typos. So I searched online to see what others thought, and true book readers all agree. "This book was simply awful. It was filled with typo's, mispelled words, and the grammatical errors were ridiculous." This was taken from another reviewer, so I'm not alone in my opinions.

First let me say that there WAS a story here. If written by a better author, this could be best-selling material. Something all women can relate to. But Mrs. Foxx doesn't have the skill yet to really tell this story. It was so badly edited that I'm wondering if Norma Martin (editor) even got her diploma, GED no less. I even went as far to find the authors web site ninafoxx.com to send her an email. This story has so many loose ends it's ridiculous. The author has so many ideas that she doesn't know how to put them all together in this story. What happens to Tyler? Why did he come back to town and what did he do when he was there? Who ransacked her apartment? Why wasn't there any character development on Malik? You can't write half a story then sum up a quarter of it in an epilogue. Just look at the last paragraph of the book. "More important than anything, Amber knew her past had made her what she was today. She was quite proud of that fact, and except for the Malik's shooting, she wouldn't change a thing." This is just an example of some of the bad writing/editing and grammatical errors that are in this book that make it a hard read because the words don't flow together. So basically, the last paragraph of this book leaves you with this thought, this lady cannot write.

I did not see how the title relates with the story. The story would have been more interesting, if the characters were developed a little more. The book really did not flow and the typos, really threw me off.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some entertainment value...but was disappointed!, January 19, 2001

This review is from: Dippin' My Spoon (Paperback)
Unfortunately, I must say right off the top, that this novel did not live up to its title. I read 'dippin' my spoon' and assumed the book might have some bite, some hip contemporary appeal and characters that were unforgettable...and alas, I was left shaking my head, and wondering if my negative feels for the book were just in my mind...did others feel the same way?

Taking from the back of the novel, DIPPIN' MY SPOON:

Amber LaReaux has it all under control. A new and exciting life is on the horizon and she is happy. Or is she? Amber quickly discovers a horrible truth about her friends and is thrust into a maze of distrust and violence that leaves the reader guessing until the very end.

The entire premise of the story fell apart for me from the start, with Amber being a case manager at a facility that offered psychological and psychiatric assistance, and yet, not once was she able to see any of the drama that unfolded around her. I know we as humans have a way of lending a blind eye to our own problems, but I just couldn't take it to THIS extreme. By the end of the book I was just like, Amber...dang..you dumb, and you need to give back them degrees from which they came.

There were also several inconsistencies throughout the novel...one particular was Amber's own "personality" switch ups in the novel...one minute, I'm assuming she's a shy woman, and next, she's downright rude to her "friend" Che or someone else and the switch-up was too often...and eventually aggravated me.

This is the second book I read recently where romance played a key part in the story, and yet the romantic element was drier than a Mohave Desert...I didn't feel them at all, and had hoped to see more feelings and UMMPH between the characters that proved there might had been a spark between them.

Umm, to those who read the book..and may read it in the future...whatever happened to ol' girl's ex, Tyler?...and um, the destruction of her place...who did it? I assume I know, but well..the book never really says.

My last thought on DIPPIN' for this review...one thing that really turned me off about DIPPIN' was the lack of dialogue. I love to hear people speak, and I feel one can learn a lot about a character through what they say, instead of a writer TELLING us what they think. The reader often knows EVERYTHING before Amber, and therefore, we might see her as stupid for continuing through the relationships she went through. You don't have to tell me someone's a dog, and that this one is a sinner, let me see it through their actions...their dialogue.

Overall, DIPPIN' MY SPOON does hold some entertainment value...Amber's conniving "friend" Che alone is mean enough to want to read about...oh yea, and Malik, best character of the book...would have been great to have his character more brought out. I do think...and this is just my own opinion...that a rewrite and more pages with dialogue, would make this a really nice book...the last chapter or so had drama unfolding left and right...and if clues had been incorporated throughout the book leading up to the climactic ending...it would have definitely made a difference in my review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Fiction with a Twist, July 10, 2000

This review is from: Dippin' My Spoon (Paperback)
I was pleased that Dippin' was more than just your average relationship novel. It actually had some twists and turns that added a suspense flavor to the novel. I enjoyed the book, and i look forward to reading Ms. Foxx's future novel. I think she has a promising future.

2.0 out of 5 stars I Know What It's Being Dipped In, March 4, 2002
This review is from: Dippin' My Spoon (Paperback)
This book started out as a good idea. The writing seemed to be okay and the dream sequences could have pulled a drowning attempt at a novel to safety, but it didn't. The characters lacked depth, there were too many holes in the plot and the main character didn't seem to know what she was doing. Ever. I flipped back to re-read parts because I was afraid I had missed something. It seemed as if the writer's mood was being reflected throughout the book. If she was in good spirits, then Amber and David got along. If not, Amber and Che tried to outdo each other with deceit and duplicity. Neither of them seemed to be the type you'd want for a friend. It was hard to like anybody in this book because you never knew who you'd be reading about from page to page. The characters weren't written in a way that you could get to know them and even at the most mundane points in the book the author felt she had to go back 10 years to explain something that had little or no relevance to the story at all. Only Toni Morrison can get away with that, but you best believe you don't win Nobel prizes doing it badly.

1.0 out of 5 stars drop the book, put your hands up, and back away slowly, February 9, 2001
This review is from: Dippin' My Spoon (Paperback)
I couldn't wait to finish this book. This book just went ON AND ON AND ON. I couldn't wait until this book was finished before writing a review. PLEASE IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY READ THIS BOOK, LEAVE IN ON THE SHELF AND "NEVER" THINK ABOUT PURCHASING IT. I majored in psychology and the character (Amber) was an industrial psychology graduate. I'm not claiming that this is the "perfect" field, and that people in this field are "perfect", but we aren't the STUPIDEST people in the world. Amber ... me off to the highest level "....". I have never in my life seen someone so naive and just plain D-U-M-B. Everything that happened to Amber deserved to happen. She allowed herself to be played by a married "man"; that lied about not being with is wife. She allowed herself to be played by her husband, who was a control freak. But who can blame him, most people will use and abuse a person if they don't speak up for themselves. And she allowed herself to be played by her "friend" Che. Come on now, what was that all about? Why would you continue to be friends with a lesbian that keeps coming on to you if that makes you uncomfortable? Why would you continue to be "friends" with someone if they had nothing but negative remarks to make about you and to you? Why would you continue to let yourself be mentally abused in that way? Why did I get the feeling that Amber enjoyed these little mind games that Che was playing with her? I'll tell you why she did, BECAUSE SHE WAS DUMB! I'm trying my best to finish this book to see if it will prove me wrong. I doubt it though; it would take a miracle to pull that off. With it's naive character"S" and typos and grammatical errors this book should have stayed where it would have done greater use (A THOUGHT/MEMORY.) It would have been better if it was still on the tree; no need in using paper to write such garbage! I was highly disappointed in this book Mrs. Foxx. It came highly recommended. Oh well, that's what I get for thinking. Next time use a different publisher (preferably one that can spell), and try a different concept.
