5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Real, And Raucous, November 28, 2001
This review is from: Dipsomania (Audio CD)
Now I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of jazz, swing, jump, and bebop extends about as far as my knowledge of quantum physics, but throw in a big guitar and a hearty dollop of humor and all of sudden I'm Stephen Hawking. And that's just what Buddy Blue (I think it's safe to stop referring to him as "ex-Beat Farmer Buddy Blue" - he's carved out a respectable career on his own, thank you very much) does on "Dipsomania!" The opening one-two punch of "Talkin' Woman" and "Whiskey Goggles" are a bluster of horns courtesy of Sweetlips Mysterioso and Patrick Weil, with the latter featuring some of Blue's mighty tasty fretwork. Although horns are featured on several songs, Blue proves he is no one-trick pony with the country blues slide showcase "Daddy's Drinkin'", a celebration of all things that contain alcohol and come in a glass container, and "That Yodelin' Hateful Rag," which features a hilarious yodeling/stream of consciousness rap by Blue directed toward some poor, unnamed schmoe. Blue is aided and abetted on "Dipsomania!" by the likes of Dave Alvin, ex-Stray Cat Lee Rocker, and ex-X (is that redundant?) guitar whiz Billy Zoom and his own Buddy Blue Band is versatile and top notch. Special mention must go to Romy Kaye, whose vocals on "Missing You" reach right out and grab you somewhere south of your waist and north of your knees. And how can you not love a guy who releases a CD with a picture of an empty bottle of Thai liquor and four full shot glasses as well as a picture of himself miked up and singing in the shower? Don't miss hidden track 18, a heartfelt tribute to sax man Joe Marillo. People of San Diego consider yourselves lucky for being able to walk down the street and see Buddy Blue in person while we here in Detroit have to bear the stigma that is Eminem. Oh the humanity...

First off I need to say that I am an OLD friend of Buddys. But that doesn't distract from the fact that this CD is ... good. It rocks, swings, and makes me wanna jump up, spill my beer and dance! Buddy's guitar is as smooth and sweet as ever, even Country Dick would be proud of little Buddy kickin' butt like this.. Buy this one folks, it's a keeper.
