BATTLE BORN
BIOGRAPHY

From out of the wreckage of the American Civil War, the great state of Nevada came into being on October 31st, 1864. Its creation immediately helped to secure the re-election of Abraham Lincoln, the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment and, ultimately, the future of the union. Today, that proud but painful history is en-shrined in the two words emblazoned on the ... Read more in Amazon's The Killers Store

Editorial Reviews

The Killers have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, headlined festivals across the globe, performed at The White House and have won multiple awards. In celebration of their four studio albums and their first decade together, The Killers will release Direct Hits.

A collection of singles from their four albums, plus two brand new songs, the album begins with the band's breakthrough smash, and first single they wrote together Mr. Brightside. It follows the group through their debut album Hot Fuss and songs like Somebody Told Me, Smile Like You Mean It, All These Things That I've Done, through Sam's Town's When You Were Young, Read My Mind and For Reasons Unknown via Day & Age's singles, including the massive 2008 hit Human, and last year's stunning Battle Born album singles, starting with Runaways.

To complete the set, new tracks Shot At The Dark (recorded with M83's Anthony Gonzales) and Just Another Girl produced by long time Killers collaborator Stuart Price.

It's hard to believe it's been almost a decade since The Killers first burst onto the scene. I remember when Hot Fuss and its singles were everywhere, seemingly coming out of nowhere and surprising all of us with their energetic and passionate performances. This collection celebrates the band's first decade together and it's exactly what you would expect from a basic hits collection. From the big hits like "Mr. Brightside" and "When You Were Young" to newer masterpieces like "A Dustland Fairytale" and "Miss Atomic Bomb", everything here does a solid job of representing the band's radio singles and popular tunes. The one surprise comes with "The Way It Was", which was never released as a single but it's a track I've always loved so I can forgive its inclusion here, as well as "Be Still", which closes the deluxe edition. It's another wonderful track that seemed like an underdog on Battle Born. The two new tracks "Shot at the Night" and "Just Another Girl" are both solid and grow on you with every spin. It's really amazing to see how well the songs in this collection have aged. "All These Things That I've Done", "Read My Mind", and "Human" still sound as fresh as they did years ago and The Killers have a knack for writing songs that seem to transcend trends and certain time periods. Direct Hits is certainly a testament to that mentality and to the band's ability to shift their sound from album to album. It's more apparent than ever with this release just how ambitious they are and the drive they maintain to never make the same album twice.

That being said, there are a few glaring omissions. The bombastic "Bones" is sorely absent here, as are "The World We Live In", "Tranquilize" (featuring the late Lou Reed) and "Here with Me".

If your a fan of The Killers and have been since they came out like me then you probably just bought this because
you buy all their cd's.
To be honest i don't need a cd full of their singles i already own all their records and i could of just bought the 2 new tracks on Direct Hits and Mr Brightside Demo and When you were young remix for way cheaper but with that said
i bought this to support one of my fav bands and i thought there would be new artwork but its just full of their record covers and only 2 new photos but with that said This is great for someone who doesn't own their records and only know them for their singles or for a newbie Killers fan or for this new day and age kids that don't own cd's this would be great for someone to have all the best Killers singles into 1 cd.

But for The Killers fans its nothing fancy its very simple looking artwork inside the cd looks like the cover
and i was somewhat disappointed with the artwork since its all their old record covers. Its just nothing new for The Killers fans and i wish there was more then 2 new tracks and i hate remixes and the demo of Mr Brightside isn't that much different then the Record version it doesn't sound like a real demo i was thinking it would be a strip down version like most demos but its very well mixed. To all The Killers fans that already own all their records this isn't a must have if you don't have the money for it right now then put it on an Xmas list for someone to buy for you or just buy the 4 new tracks to save some money. But i know The Killers fans and im sure pretty much every last one of you already bought this lol.

In this day and age of cherry-picking songs off of iTunes, listening for free off of You Tube, and self-made playlists, there seems to be little need for an officially-released compilation album. However, I am very pleased that The Killers have gone the traditional route and compiled all their best songs into a single new release.

Like many other reviewers, I already have all The Killers' albums, so the only new material I'm getting is tracks 14 - 17. And yet I don't consider my money wasted, because I do think it's important to support your favorite artists financially. Not only is it just the right thing to do, but it enables them to continue making great music. Secondly, listening to this whole disc all the way through serves as a reminder of what a great band The Killers really are. Certainly one of the best bands of the new century.

The "Mr. Brightside" demo and the "When You Were Young" remix are really the only tracks I don't care for. As one reviewer stated already, the "Mr. Brightside" demo is only mildly different from the album version, and the "When You Were Young" remix, like many remixes, is superfluous.

The new song "Shot At The Night" is fantastic, more proof that The Killers almost can't make a bad song.

All in all, whether you've been a dedicated fan since their first album, or if you're just getting into The Killers, I would say this album is worth your money.

What can I say? If you like The Killers and you have all their previous CDs you don't need this but if you don't and you want to have the very best of them you definitely need this.
