OK - I got it - this is not a cheap disc - you'll probably have to fork over for it. But, if you like Tower Of Power (or Blood, Sweat, and Tears, or any other horn-driven honk/blues/funk/soul band), this is prime stuff, for sure. There are actually two Sheffield Lab recordings - Direct, and Direct Plus!, with the "Plus" ("the audiophile reference series") edition adding four additional takes on the titles already contained - Squibcakes, Fanfare/You Know It, That's Why I Sing, and What Is Hip. If horns really turn your prop, then either version of this disc is worth owning; if you have the chance to choose and nothing to lose, go for both. If the budget is limited, then my recommendation is to go for the Plus! version, simply because of the added value of ten cuts vs six. Direct/Direct Plus! offers steaming hot versions of Back on the Street's cut of "And You Know it" that cooks like a Mickey D's kitchen during the lunchtime rush - it alone would be worth the price of admission, but rest assured, all tunes are primetime TOP. Additionally, the meticulous mastering on both Direct and Direct Plus! is every bit the equal (or maybe even a cut above) to the gold master recordings put out by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab - crisp, sharp, clean music that will thrill to the bone, bring on the goosebumps, and if cranked high enough, flat push your face against the wall. Highly recommended.

I purchased the LP when it came out then the CD when it came out a few years later. I used this set of identical recordings for an LP vs. CD demonstration to skeptical friends for years! The LP is full of all kinds of life when compared to the CD. The LP beats the CD in every single audio category with the exception of a little bit of background noise that you only hear between tracks. It has more bell-like cymbals (much different than the noise splash on the CD), deeper and more solid drums and bass lines, and the horns just snarl like they're supposed to on the LP. Listen to both side-by-side and hear it for yourself. SNR and headroom are meaningless in this comparison.

I hope Sheffield remastered the CD and re-released it since the one I purchase (had to have been around 1986). I had a nice Micro Seiki turntable with a 2nd rung Grado MC cartridge and a NAD CD player - both run through an NAD or Adcom mid-line integrated amp. Nothing fancy - but the LP really kicks butt. The previous reviewer is right - this recording turned up loud has a ton of life to it!

Received this purchase quickly and in perfect condition.packed beautifully. Only downside was the music is average for such a great band as Tower Of Power. It is a rare record, so I guess that accounts for the high price, but it was not worth it :( But, yes great service :)

Incredible recording and music. If you love audiophile quality, get this! In fact, get anything produced by Sheffield Labs.

I bought after reading about it. It may not be the best music Tower of Power ever recorded but it does sound good.
