More of this review is about the installation experience than the unit itself. If someone else will be doing the installation you may want to skip to the "Actual Product Review" section.

The Avital 4103LX is a remote starter manufactured by Directed Electronics, who also manufacture the Clifford, Python and Viper brands (among others). The 4103LX (which replaced the older 4103L) comes with two one-way remotes and has no alarm features. Since my wife's 2004 Sable station wagon is not exactly high on the "vulnerability to theft" chart, the factory alarm offers more than adequate protection. Two-way remotes (which show on the remote when the car is running) are fancier but they reportedly chew through batteries quickly. Therefore I decided that a one-way system like the 4103LX would best suit our needs.

For years most cars have had additional security devices built into their keys. This is why keys now cost $30-$300 rather than 45 cents. Installing a remote starter in these vehicles requires the purchase of a transponder override module which can cost an additional $25 to $80. These are usually specific to the make of vehicle. For the Mercury I used a model PKFM from XPressKit (yet another Directed Electronics company). Be aware that you may need both factory keys to program the bypass to your vehicle. Some models actually require you to leave one key permanently in the unit (tough if two people drive the car) but others (like the PKFM) only need your keys for the initial programming.

Because of the complexity of installing these products the installation instructions are aimed at professional installers. Although I've not installed a remote start system before, I owned a car audio installation center until 1988 so I'm not unfamiliar with car electronics.

I have been an installer for 15 years and have been using DEI products the whole time. It is designed to be installed by a professional and if you cant do it, don't give the system 1 star. there is a reason why the shops that install them exist, its complicated and it gets even more complicated as the newer vehicles come out. Also, you cant do 90% of new cars without a bypass or canbus module installed along with the remote starter. This is a quality product and I order them to install for friends and family. The price is great if you can find a pro that can do the work for you. Stay away from the $20 DYI systems, they offer great detail on how to do the install but is the average DIYer going to know how to wire a 1 wire door lock system using relays/diodes and a resistors? wire a reversing polarity door locking system? Flashing a canbus module and wiring into the sensitive systems of a push to start? Think before you buy, if you can't set the clock on your microwave, you shouldn't attempt to wire a remote starter your self.

**I did not install this myself so my review is based on cost, research, feedback, and use**

I just to moved to MD and wanted to get a remote starter installed in my 2007 Ford Expedition in time for winter. I do *not* know anything about after market vehicle add on's (I keep my cars stock; ya ya, I know, I'm boring) and was nervous about buying something online but I read the reviews on Amazon, did some cost analysis amongst other websites, and thought, "what the heck, why not?" With Amazon's amazing customer service, and for the price that this was selling for, I knew that I wasn't taking on much of a risk.

The installer told me that this system is a great remote start system and after a short discussion with the installer, I decided to get the rear defroster option added into the remote start. The installer did not have any issues with this kit nor the bypass kit that I bought (Directed Electronics PKALL Encrypted Key Data Tranponder Bypass Kit). He programmed the 4 button remotes to be the only remotes that I use with the vehicle so it locks, arms alarm, unlocks, open the back door, and remote starts. The remote works well and has a great radius. When I get ready to pack my lunch for work, I just walk to where I keep my keys, push the button, and my car starts right up. My truck will stay on but will shut off if I press on the brake before turning my key to actually start the truck. It's set to where if the truck is on, and the key hasn't been inserted into the ignition, it will shut off on it's own.

Overall, I'm glad I bought this kit. The cost was great and the feedback I got from the installer was good as well.

I purchased this with the proximity sensor (508 D), I was warned i would get a bunch of false alarms. I did get alot of " warn away chirps", because of ppl with muffler issues, cats sitting beside the vehicle, and even when the morning dew evaporates of the window it triggers the warn away on the alarm. To me, i think the proximity sensor works too well. im not upset, because it does what its meant to do. Alarm has a " Valet Mode" function, where u can take your keys out of the car and leave the car running for however many minutes its set for. Alarm has a silent mode, where u silence the annoying warn away, if u have the proximity like i have. yet will not stop the alarm from functioning in normal state. Alarm has Remote Start. Alarm has Temperature sensor for interior of vehicle which can be viewed from keyfob. Alarm has a timer mode where u can set the car to start for every so many hours and run for the minutes programed for when remote started. Alarm has Temperature Start, for example if the vehicles interior air temp drops below 0 degrees the vehicle will start and run for alotted time on its own. Thats just to name a few things, that alone gets 5 stars for me. My only issue is when the warn aways alert too much (i have hooked to factory horn as well) it kills my battery. So, proximity sensor can lead to a bunch of warn aways which can kill your battery. Get the proximity if u want to keep the perp from smashing your windows/ u have a convertible. If you can afford, get the tilt sensor for perps that wanna tow, I didnt get the glass break sensor because if the glass is broken and if the perp; enters the vehicle, the proximity will trigger the alarm. Crooks are getting smarter so atleast start with an alarm on your vehicle hopefully that makes them think twice.Read more ›
