5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for any filmmaker!!!
I would like to briefly state that Michael R.'s work is well conceived and his book is a must read for any filmmaker that is interested in developing a serious insight. Some books leave you sometimes wanting more or needing to seek out the missing pieces in other texts; Rabiger goes deep and draws in readers with a mass of useful info for filmmakers that i have come to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing 30 pages
When I buy books, I don't always have the time to read them through immediately. With this book, I started reading here and there when I had the time. So by the time I got to page 68, it had already been a month since I bought it.

When I got to page 68, I found out this book has a big problem: it's missing pages 69-100. That's right, if you open to page 68,...

4.0 out of 5 stars valuable, technical text, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Directing, Fourth Edition: Film Techniques and Aesthetics (Screencraft Series) (Paperback)
Rabiger's book was introduced to me while I was studying directing in an MFA program for film making. It is a technically sound book, and early exercises help aspiring directors begin to understand themselves and the types of stories they are best suited to tell. Then it works well in going into in depth analysis of break down of films into department, and the process to work within a large group of creatives to achieve the goal of the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for directors, August 9, 2009

This review is from: Directing, Fourth Edition: Film Techniques and Aesthetics (Screencraft Series) (Paperback)
This is a directing class in a book. Is it the only book on directing you will ever need? It's pretty close to it. It has some great exercises that should be done, don't skip a single one. If you want to be a director or already are, this is a book that will always serve you. You can read it for the first film you do and read it for the 50th film you do and it will take your skill to the next level. Great resource at any level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, broad basis for studying Directing, January 9, 2010
This review is from: Directing, Fourth Edition: Film Techniques and Aesthetics (Screencraft Series) (Paperback)
This is a great textbook if you're new to Directing and looking for a txt that covers the totality of directing, not simply something more specific, say, a text on directing the actor (the secion covering this is only about 10 or so pages). This is a very broad based text. A directory to directing.

You can't go wrong with this but if you're seeking something more fine tuned, you may want to sharpen your search. This books if for those who want to be briefed in all areas of directing, not just one specific area.

A good starter book for new directors.

This is the first textbook that I've ever enjoyed reading. It's so easy to read and it's interesting. By far the best textbook I've ever had and since I'm graduating this year the best text I'll ever have!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For the Filmmaker's Library, March 2, 2011

I had to read this text in a graduate class I took last year, and before I got it, I dreaded the thought of reading it--now I find it indispensible. It is a pragmatic guide to directing. It helps you focus on each aspect of directing--and while not "fine tuned" on each topic--as volumes can cover each topic--it tells you what you need to know. If you are thinking about becoming a director or you are a director, I feel you will find the text valuable.

Though this is a text book, it's filled with a lot of great information. It's technical, but it also gets into the mindset and emotional state of being a director. I highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing 30 pages, February 15, 2011

When I buy books, I don't always have the time to read them through immediately. With this book, I started reading here and there when I had the time. So by the time I got to page 68, it had already been a month since I bought it.

When I got to page 68, I found out this book has a big problem: it's missing pages 69-100. That's right, if you open to page 68, which is on the left, you will see page 101 on the right.

68 and 101 look like they were meant to be together. What I mean by that, is that the book looks completely normal if you were to look at it and hold it in your hands. The only way you'd know their was a problem was if you tried to look for any page from 69 to 100.

I called Amazon about 2 days after the 30 days had past (that's when I noticed the problem. They said they couldn't do anything because the 30 days had already past. I'm an Amazon Prime customer and I buy a bunch of crap off of Amazon. I'm not a happy customer. Shame on you Amazon, for refusing to fix a customer's problem. And same on Focal Press for publishing a book this way.
