A collection of papers which presents a functionalist approach to syntax, taking discourse into consideration. Essays discuss a variety of topics, including: morhpo-syntactic phenomenon from a functional point of view; case theory from the point of view of discourse; topicalization and dislocation; aspects of the informational structures of English, Chinese Japanese; the function(s) of "marked" rules or constructions such as left dislocation and VP preposing based on actual samples of discourse; the notion of agentivity in relation to aspect in Japanese; and the development and cognitive basis of the conditional construction in English, Korean and Japanese.
