Director 8 and Lingo Authorised,
By Peck Cheng , Tan (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Director 8 and Lingo Authorized (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
This book clearly describes director , shockwave and Lingo. Examples are given to illustrate the various concepts covered in the book. However, the converage of Lingo is not extensive , Director 7 Demystified offers better description of the Lingo programming model. Its a good book for beginners , however , for a extensive understand of Lingo , Director 7 Desmystified is a better choice

Works for me,

I am new to Director as an application. I found the Lessons and explanations most instructive. This program has intimidated me for years. I was put in a position where I had to learn it begrudgingly. This book made it easy and more like a hill rather than a mountain for a learning curve. I recommend it for newbies.

too rudimentary for even the absolute beginner,

our school used to provide this book to the students of its director-intro-class.more then the first half of the book focuses on linear-score-animation. it is not until well into the book that the reader ever even encounters lingo at all. the skills demonstrated in this book are the skills which students of our director-intro class posess after the first day. now.. if you want to do nothing more than corporate, powerpoint presentations in director and don't know how to do them, then this is the book for you. but if you want to gain any skills above your text or image floating across the screen with a cheesy transition, stay away from this book and look elsewhere.

Great beginner book,

The book is an excellent walkthrough for beginners - the fact that they took into account a lot of common mistakes and diagrams to show you EXACTLY what they mean shows that a lot of research went into it to keep you from being stuck. This saves you a lot of time and it's not a pain like some books which skip some steps or contain ambiguous words that leave you frustratingly stuck. Sure, it takes up a lot of space but I rather a heavy book than a thin one that wastes my time. Because of this, I found that I could also breeze through some chapters just by reading - handy for when you can't be at a PC and want to do some background reading.Another plus point: I found the approximate time required to complete each chapter useful. I am always on track and feel sooo happy when I beat the clock! haha! If you're the kind who learns through tutorials as well, this is it. On the downside: I found the book a bit too easy. I didn't get to learn too many functions but they sure build you a solid foundation and hammer in good habits. Well, as I said, it's great for beginners but maybe for intermediate users, you'd need something deeper. Before this book, I was Lingo-phobic. Now I have enough confidence to pick up heavier stuff.

I am 15 years old, and im new to director 8. I'm thought it would be a good program to learn since macromedia seems to be the future software. This is my first director 8 book that I've read and it's very helpful. Most everything I've wanted to know I've found in this book. I would recommend this book to any beginers, It's a very good book!

Great book that makes Director manageable for beginners!,

I've been trying to learn Director for the past 3 years. Finding a class that is not an intensive course is impossible in my area. This book presents the information in small, manageable bites. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to learn Director from the basics. Like the other "Training from the Source" books by Macromedia, this book is broken into 1 hour lessons that allow you to absorb the information at your pace.I highly recommend it.

Great starter book,

After working through Director's tutorial and paying for online training, this book is filling in the gaps and preparing me for more advanced work. Because the book not only tells you what to do, it explains clearly why you are doing it, the book is far superior to the paid online training. With my background, I jumped in about halfway and only use beginning chapters as a reference. The only way to beat this for value is doing the free training on the web to get started with Director. Not being a programming guru, I find this book extremely helpful. It fits my learning style perfectly.

One thing that is nice about this book, is the fact that it has the lingo code that can be used not only for Director CDs, but also for Shockwave sites.. A must have.
