Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Director 6 Book is a solid introduction to the essential and advanced aspects of this multimedia authoring program for Windows and Macintosh. It discusses each feature as opposed to giving step-by-step instruction. The author, Gary Rosenzweig, assumes you're fairly familiar with Director, although he does provide an overview of the interface and elements such as the score and cast. You first learn about working with images, paint tools, color palettes, sounds, digital video, and text, and then you learn the basic and advanced aspects of Lingo, Director's scripting language. Rosenzweig also discusses how to work with Xtras, the add-ins for extending Director's functionality; and how to create stand-alone movies, or projectors, as well as Shockwave movies. There's a lot of sample Lingo code. The appendices include references to new Lingo commands, Lingo commands arranged by subject, keyboard shortcuts, and Xtras, as well as tables on ASCII characters and colors for Macintosh and Windows systems. A hybrid CD-ROM includes demo versions of several Macromedia apps, including Director 5, and third-party Xtras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for pros!, August 16, 1998

This review is from: The Director 6 Book: The Ultimate Guide for Multimedia Professionals (Paperback)
Finally a Director book that goes beyond the basics! This book is worth the money for the advanced coverage of Lingo, Shockwave and more. Not for the casual user. Lots of useful info for the Director power-user/programmer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, some errors., March 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Director 6 Book: The Ultimate Guide for Multimedia Professionals (Paperback)
While this book has a lot of solid information, the author often glosses over powerful concepts that could prove to be more useful if explored in greater detail. There are a few errors in the book, such as the diagram on p. 55 of the Import dialog box, which is a screenshot from Director 5.0 Mac; the descriptive text in this chapter mentions nothing about the newer interface faound in Director 6.0.

Other than a few errors, the book presents itself fairly well. The Lingo Machine found on the CD ROM is very valuable, and contains excellent examples that are pretty easy to learn by. Goes well with The Lingo Programmer's Reference, now unfortunately out of print.
