Book Description

August 1997
Developed by Macromedia's own staff, this CD/book package features master teachers from Macromedia demonstrating everything from basic Director skills to Lingo in this cross-platform CD-ROM-based training course. Animated movies with full narration bring the instruction alive and lead users through the fundamentals and on to adding interactivity to Director movies via Lingo scripts. After finishing this "course," users will be able to create multimedia projects and Shockwave Web sites using Director Multimedia Studio, as well as use Lingo to make their movies interactive. Users can then practice the skills they've learned using the full-featured demo versions of the software and all the files needed, included on the same CD-ROM. The companion book illustrates the step-by-step instructions offered in the interactive training and offers a browsable overview to the content of the CD as an additional reference.Director 6 and Lingo Interactive is now cross-platform and covers both Director 6 and Lingo. This new, expanded edition--still $49.95--is now appropriate for new, intermediate, and advanced intermediate Director users. After mastering the basics of Director, users move on to complete increasingly more advanced tasks, up to and including scripting with Lingo.

Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for an in-depth guide to Macromedia Director 6 but prefer the hands-on experience of learning in a classroom environment to the abstraction of trudging through a thick manual, check out Director 6 and Lingo Interactive. This book combines CD-ROM-based exercises with a simple workbook for learning the software in a series of easy-to-follow lessons. First, you get an overview of Director's interface, and then you create a movie, add animations, insert keyframes, add special effects, and create film loops. Next, you enhance your work using the ancillary products that now come with Director and comprise Director Multimedia Studio: Extreme 3D for 3-D modeling, xRes for bitmap editing, and SoundEdit and Sound Forge for sound editing. Finally, you get a thorough introduction to Lingo and learn how to use it to create markers, labels, buttons, visual feedback, and other effects. The CD-ROM (there's one for Macintosh and one for Windows) offers audiovisual tutorials that show you how to use each feature; you click the Practice button on the tutorial's interface to put what you've learned to use. This is a great way to learn a complicated software package such as Director.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a good book for people not taking in-class lessons, January 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Director 6 and Lingo Interactive (Paperback)
I was not happy to see that the book was written for someone who is not receiving instruction in Director (ie. classroom). I found it difficult to find references to specific questions. The book seemed to follow a set of lessons thus making it difficult to find a specific topic. This, of course, is only one person's opinion. If you already have some exposure to Director, you will probably want something geared more toward reference, not lessons.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for a first look, but not complete for mastery, August 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Director 6 and Lingo Interactive (Paperback)
Great for beginning experience at Animation, but for learning lingo more was required. For a more complete comprehensive book, I recommend Director 6 Demystified.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for learning the basics quickly, August 24, 1998
This review is from: Director 6 and Lingo Interactive (Paperback)
I enjoyed the ease of the tutorials, but realized the lingo lessons barely scratch the surface. Still need to find something else if I'm going to create a truly interactive movie.
