Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Director Studio Skills is a useful guide for beginners who want to learn how to create animations and movies in Director 6 for Windows or Macintosh. The author first teaches you what's new in Director 6 and then explains how to manage memory and color settings in your Macintosh or Windows system. Next you learn all about Director's interface elements, such as the stage, the sprites, the cast, and the control panel. The author addresses cross-platform issues and teaches you how to create a cross-platform palette and how to use the right fonts, video files, and audio files for your purposes. Then you get into hands-on exercises using Director's Paint Window, Internal Cast Window, Score Window, Tool Palette, and Color Palettes Window. You learn how to use Director's Xtras, create text elements and animations, place sprites upon a path, and create advanced animations using real-time animations, film loops, key frame animations, onion-skinning, and color cycling. You also learn how to incorporate audio and video files into your movie. You can make a projector or stand-alone application; create Shockwave movies; and use Director's Drag-and-Drop Behaviors. Finally, the author teaches you the rudiments of Lingo, and you apply what you've learned to customizing a project file. You also get a glossary of computer and multimedia terms and a guide to keyboard shortcuts. The included CD-ROM features project files that follow the many exercises in the book. In addition, the CD-ROM contains sample Director movies and demo versions of special effects software.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for learning Director concepts for 6.0, August 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Director 6 Studio Skills (Paperback)
This book gives indepth insight into why things are the way they are in Director 6: when is a sprite a sprite, how to use the inks, creating and using pallettes (and putting them onto the score),what behaviors can do, creating animation, using video, and so much more. Only problem for a novice is that the tutorial files noted in the book and on the cover are just not on the CD-ROM. That's a very big disappointment. For it's instructional merit alone, I give it 3.5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this book, April 22, 1999

I found it hard to follow and does not cover much. Lingo is hardly mentioned.

1.0 out of 5 stars No lingo & CD doesn't contain advertised content, March 9, 1998
By
This review is from: Director 6 Studio Skills (Paperback)
This book claims to be for "casual to accomplished users, yet it scarcely mentions Lingo, Director's scripting language. Furthermore, the book cover claims that the CD contains the files for the chapters in the book, however it merely contains a few pieces of demo software, and if you want the files you must download them from the publisher's web site. WHen contacted, the publishers showed no remorese, but did offer to refund my money if I wished to return the book, or offered to give directions as to how to download the files. That said, the basic lessons (there are no advanced ones) contained in the book are adequately covered. Because of its lack of any real examination of Lingo, I cannot recommend this book to anyone but the rank novice who wishes to use Director to produce non-interactive movies or slide shows. Me, I returned the book the next day.
