Editorial Reviews

Deluxe three CD edition includes Director's Cut plus remastered versions of The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, all housed in a case-bound book. 2011 album from the British songstress. On Directors Cut, Kate revisits a selection of tracks from her albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, a process that presents a fascinating portrait of an artist in a constant state of evolution. She has re-recorded some elements whilst keeping the best musical performances of each song - making it something of a director's cut but in sound, not vision. All the lead vocals and drums are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris. Three songs have been completely re-recorded, one of which is 'This Woman's Work.' EMI.

Grateful for anything she puts out, more more more please!

So, the BIGGEST BONUS with the 3CD Collector's edition, and why I thoroughly recommend it over the regular CD issue, is the extra discs.

There is a drive and desperation in the work that is emotionally exhausting.

This review is for the 3CD Collector's Edition of "Director's Cut", which Amazon also calls a Box Set (though there is no box). In my opinion, this is the version to get, even though quite expensive.

"Red Shoes" and "Sensual World" have long been in my top 3 favorite Kate albums (the other, naturally, being "Hounds of Love"). It's great to have these different versions of some choice tracks from each. The main enjoyment of the "Director's Cut" disc itself for me is recapturing that sense of freshness from when I first heard both these albums on vinyl (on an old music center) just before buying in to the CD revolution after it was old news. The new songs are put to CD in a way which allows you to listen to them time and time over. Without the horrible over-production which blights many modern releases they sound good with the volume up, to fill a room, or down low, as I drop off to sleep... Others here have written about the songs and done their comparisons, and I suppose it is each to their own. I won't add mine, but will say that as CDs go, I think the sound is about as good as it gets, without any hint of over-production or "loudness wars" mastering. If you like any of the "originals", you're sure to find some pleasures here.

But of course these new versions can never be "definitive" versions, at least not on their own, as what makes the tracks on "Director's Cut" special is their differences from the originals. And it is in giving us the "originals" to make comparisons, and in such pristine listenable shape, that this package excels.

So, the BIGGEST BONUS with the 3CD Collector's edition, and why I thoroughly recommend it over the regular CD issue, is the extra discs.

The very best part of the "Director's Cut" deluxe edition is the remastered version of the album "The Red Shoes." That original release was the only Kate Bush album to be released with digital mastering, which the artist later regretted -- and with very good reason. The album's sound was too crisp and created a disconnect between the voice and the music. It wasn't terrible by any means, but it certainly was jarring after hearing the warmth of her previous (wonderful) albums "Hounds of Love" and The Sensual World." Bush has rectified this, not with a newly mastered version but rather with the original analog-mastered backups. The result is a sound that is quite a bit more layered and rich-sounding than the previous version.

Also, Kate's lovely voice interfaces better with the music because the warmth of the new release creates a different mood and possesses an altered sonic landscape. Some of the songs sound different as a result of the mastering; this is especially obvious on "Eat the Music" and "Top of the City". (Also, the newer "Big Stripey Lie" fades out a tad early, rather than having the ending fans are used to.) Mind you, they are not remixes but they may occasionally make you think they are. This disc is a must for Kate Bush fans.

A few other notes:

1. The "Director's Cut" CD has fans divided, it seems. I tend to treat it as a novelty rather than a proper album. And I've found I like a third of the tracks better than the originals, a third less, and a third about the same. How each fan receives this album will vary, because of the nature of the project, so I won't spend a lot of time detailing my opinions of each new recording. But I will say I enjoy it more with each listen, though I doubt it will ever become a favorite in my Kate collection.

For all you rock stars out there, pay attention: Kate offers among these three discs a master class in how to reconsider one's work and remaster tapes taht were near perfect to begin with. The Director's Cut Disc itself offers a reconsideration from Bush today of highlights from The Sensual World and the Red Shoes, somewhat stripped of some of the production effects and sung in different keys to accomodate the changes in her voice. The effect is that they resonate with as much, if not more pwer and authority now than they did back in their first iteration. Bush was on a tear from The hounds of Love through the Red Shoes, and while there isn't anything from Hounds here, what is on offer is her original idea for the soliloquy from Molly Bloom in Ulysses. The Flower of the Mountain is worth the price of the set all by itself. and God bless the Joyce family for finally giving this the greenlight it deserves. It amy even carry more weight now as Kate would be closer in age to Molly at this point.
The remasters are things of wonder. For the record, they were terrific when they first came out and set her so far apart that nearly every other woman working in rock was overshadowed by her. Pale imitators like Amos never could hold a candle, and with the work done on teh tapes in getting them ready for this set, those incredible sessions set her light years beyond each and every pretender. Whatever david Gilmour heard in her as a teenager, by Sensual World she had vindicated his critical judgment. Keep in mind thatw ith that record she jettisoned past the artistic benchmarks that even such pioneers as Peter Gabriel were setting. Listening to the remaster is like lsitening to it for the first time and teh whallop delivered by the Trio Bulgarka will knock the emotional wind out of you.
