From Booklist
Generally, treatment philosophy falls into two categories--harm reduction and faith-based therapies--both of which are clearly explained in the Directory's introduction. Available treatment types are both inpatient and outpatient, long and short term, and may include specialized programs (behavior modification, continuing education, sober housing, etc.).
Since arrangement of the 1,300 profiles is alphabetical first by state, then by facility name, the three indexes are essential. Profiles are identified by entry number. There is the obvious name index; an age-range index, which divides the facilities into six age brackets (all ages, under 13, 13-17, 18-25, 18 and up, 30 and up); and a treatment program index. The programs are as varied as the facilities. Among those included are 12-step recovery, Alzheimer's, detox, dual diagnosis, group therapy, employee assistance, relapse prevention, and eating disorders. Some programs are available in Spanish. An extensive listing of support groups, research centers, resource organizations, periodicals, pamphlets, conferences, trade shows, and Web sites immediately precedes the indexes. This excellent, much needed directory fills an important gap created by the cessation of Drug, Alcohol, and Other Addictions: A Directory of Treatment Centers and Prevention Programs Nationwide (2d ed., Oryx, 1993).
