Grade 6-10 -Two books to help teens navigate a path through two thoroughly confounding subjects.
Dating has a conservative Christian viewpoint, with a liberal sprinkling of Bible verses. Its overall message and well-intentioned advice may get lost as readers encounter some of the author's strongly held convictions about male-female relationships, chiefly that marriages are not equal partnerships but rather male led (a point that the author concedes is a bone of contention even among Christians). Much of the text is common sense, perhaps old-fashioned, but practical about dating and choosing wisely whom to date. Particularly good are the "Definitely Different Date Ideas," which are fun suggestions for daters of all ages.
Drugs takes a more secular approach. Lookadoo was a probation officer in East Texas and talks straight with readers about different drugs, what they do, and why it's a dumb decision to take them. His no-nonsense approach and readable text make this book a good choice for a much wider audience than
Dating. Both texts are slickly done and visually appealing.
