It seems to pick up nicely and have good suction power for the price.
The filter is washable and so is the dirt cup.
The charging port is on the back of the handle, not on the underside like other products.. This is much more convenient.
Takes a long time to charge
The dirt cup is small, but this isn't really a big deal for me because when I'm cleaning I always keep a large trash can or trash bag with me at all times and can empty it frequently. This could however, be a problem for others.
The bright red color is hideous, but that's what Dirt Devil makes their products in.
That gray tight corners tool that comes out doesn't stay out. You have to manually hold it out or it will pop back in for no reason. I don't particularly like the fact that this tool is put in there like that.. Its very inconvenient when you're cleaning and it goes in and out, in and out.
The top that you empty by pressing the two silver side buttons doesn't always latch down and it happened to open mid cleaning and spill its contents all over the stairs on me.. Nice.
Its big and bulky and definitely not user friendly. I prefer the skinnier vacuums.
I use this machine everyday for about 10 minutes. I keep this charged 24/7 and the suction stays strong for half an hour straight. I had Black and Decker handhelds in the past and usually they only last 5 minutes and no where as strong as this baby. Dirt Devil, I find, is more well built than Black and Decker handhelds.
- Strong suction
- Easy to clean out filter
- Very convenient to have around the house
- Multi-floor use (For regular jobs, pets, and targeted areas)
- Energy Star rated
- One year warranty
- None so far, but only had it for a month. Will update if anything
FYI: Color shouldn't affect its performance. Besides, Red is the color of Bacon.
Original Review November 2014: I can't compare this unit, as I've not owned a lot of handheld vacuums - I did throw out a rechargeable Eureka, but that was years ago. This Dirt Devil is powerful, reliable, and solidly built. I think the dirt capture area could be a bit larger - you really need to empty the dirt compartment, and blow out the filter, after every time you use it. I've read some comments about the charging time, and the instructions to periodically do a full discharge / recharge cycle; I guess that means this unit uses nickel-cadmium batteries, and a low power charger. That is, in itself, good news - NiCads are more powerful than NiMH batteries, but they suffer from "battery memory", so need to be properly maintained. The low power charger will ensure the battery lasts a long time - fast chargers are great, but they kill the rechargeable battery (I am writing this having ordered a premature replacement battery for my Black & Decker Firestorm drill kit, for which I do use a fast charger). After al, this Dirt Devil does not have a replaceable battery, so once it's gone the unit is unusable.
If you're not into all that maintenance, don't get this unit, there are plenty others. From an engineering perspective, it all makes good sense, and should help achieve years of service, provided you look after it. I will ;) and the design is pleasant to they eye.
BTW, the manual states the charging light does not come off, when the unit is fully charged. I guess they changed the electronics, somewhere along the line, and didn't tell the writers, because it does.
