4.0 out of 5 stars Cute...
The 4th book in this series... again, proves to be a cute read.
Mrs. Murphy and Tee Tucker return with Harry to solve a murder. This book brings the return of Blair, Harry's possible romance, and develops a lot of the character relationships more.
I will be reading more in the series... (i think it's on #10 now!)
Very cute, easy read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not That Bad, I Guess, but Not That Good Either!
I know what I'm in for when I read a Sneaky Pie Brown book, so I shouldn't have been surprised with this one. It's the usual fare - murders in Crozet and all the citizens getting involved in trying to find the murderer. Then there's Tucker and Mrs. Murphy (Harry's pets) who always seem to figure things out before the humans do. These books are definitely of the "cozy"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, May 17, 1999
By A Customer
I don't care if the animals talk or not, they are still a very good part of the story. I like the fact that they are totally loyal to Harry, and care so much about her. The writing is great and very enjoyable to follow, you wait for the next set of happenings to see if it matches what you thought was going to go on. Being able to figure out "who done it" is just part of the good fun of the entire series of books. Reccomend for a good read and a fast one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book with Exciting, Always changing plot, April 9, 1998
By A Customer
These series of books with Sneaky Pie Brown are always intriguing. The plots are great and the animals always add humor to the story. The characters are well described and all like someone that you could relate to. The endings are always surprising and never are what you would expect. The books are an all-around great mystery

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun! (But get the possum out of the barn!!!), April 20, 1999
By A Customer
I have to confess -- I figured out "who done it" almost as soon as the first murder victim was introduced, and never really worried about the resolution of the crime. I also find Ms Brown (or maybe it's Sneaky Pie) a little wooden as a writer. And I almost never enjoy cute stories in which animals think like little people in fur pajamas.

And none of that mattered one whit as far as my enjoyment of this story was concerned. Despite the fact that I was positive I knew who the villian was (and I was right) I still read this whole book in one happy sitting. I like these characters (especially Miranda Hoggendobber, who gets more likable as the series goes on!), Harry is an entertaining heroine who nicely balances "feistiness" and brains with empathy, and the animals... well, they aren't one bit realistic, but are entertaining enough that I am willing to suspend disbelief, just this once. (My animals say mroe with their ears and tails than these incredibly "talky" critters, but Mrs Murphy, Tee Tucker, and Pewter are nicely drawn enough that I don't mind the fact that they are more human than animal.)

Just one thing -- every time I read about Simon the possum, I cringe. Dear readers, if you allow wild animals into your horse barns, please draw the line at possums, who are a primary carrier of a parasite that causes an extremely serious and often fatal neurological disease in horses. I know, I know, it's only a story. Just keep EPM in mind in real life, and make sure the only barn possums you permit are in these pages, all right?

Aside from that... if you take this series for what it is (and not too seriously) these mysteries are excellent fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel at home in Crozet!, January 25, 2003

I absolutely love Rita Mae Brown's characters! I have approximately three more to read and I will have read all she has out at present. Through reading her Mrs. Murphy Mysteries, I have a very vivid appearance of each and every character in Crozet. They're family! Mrs. Murphy, Tucker and Pewter are like my two cats and one dog. Pay Dirt is a wonderful mystery as are all of her stories. I just can't get enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfull, January 28, 2000
By A Customer
I first read this series when I was in sixth grade. And since then I, I am now in 9th, I have read the series many more times. This particular book is my favorite of the bunch. IT's full of fun and adventur I can enjoy over and over again. I find the characters charming, especially the animals, and the mystery keeps you guessing at every turn. Every time I pick up this book I still find myself itching to find out who it is. MAybe I have brain laps, but it always stays exciting for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars where were the animals this time around?, August 10, 1997
By A Customer
Mrs. Murphy needs her trusty terrier companion, and their mom needs them both. I really missed the animal interaction in this book. Tee Tucker was imortalized as one of my favorite dogs in fiction with the discovery of that human hand ("oh, delicious smell!") in an earlier book. I have to say this story was more interesting and harder to solve than some of the earlier installments. The depths of human depravity are really deep around this little village. Sort of an American version of a Miss Marple book. Enjoyable, stimulating, but lacking in the cat & dog charm that drew me to the series in the first place. Still worth the time if you like a mystery that is a challenge rather than a visit to an old friend

4.0 out of 5 stars A "Tail" of Intrigue, July 25, 2006
In the 4th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker mystery series, a mysterious stranger has ridden into the sleepy town of Crozet, Virginia. Rumbling in on a motorcycle, the appearance of the man yelling for "Malibu" startles the small town, and they try to insist to the man that no woman by that name resides in the area. Even though the residents of Crozet are curious, they have other things on their minds. The town is worried about a computer virus, Threadneedle, that is supposed to hit businesses on August 1st. When a huge sum of money goes missing from the local bank, everyone assumes that the bank has fallen victim to the computer virus. Everyone scrambles at the bank to locate the missing funds, and when the biker is found murdered, pieces of the puzzle start to fall together. And when Harry and her two famous animal sleuths get involved in the case, you can be sure that she will find and apprehend the culprit.

I have become a big fan of this series, and really enjoy the banter between the animals. The relationships between the members of the town have been evolving, and I like the way that Harry is loved and embraced by the people who have known her all of her life. She works hard, cares for her animals, and genuinely cares for the town and its residents. I look forward to future books in the series, and am hopeful to see more of a love interest for Harry.

If you enjoy "The Cat Who" mysteries by Lilian Jackson Braun, you might want to give this series a try.

The first book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here". Enjoy!
