Book Description

February 26, 2008 4 and upP and up

In this hilarious collection of poems, comedian Jeff Foxworthy creates a neighborhood filled with fun, family, friends, and more. Here you'll meet Cousin Lizzy, Uncle Ed and Aunt Foo Foo, cows with horns that don't go beep, dads in sweaters, also sheep. From the thrill of flying to the imaginary planet Woosocket to bonding with a friend over a shared hatred of spinach, these poems capture the very essence of being a kid.

Filled with sly humor and always affectionate, Dirt on My Shirt is sure to delight kids, big and little, everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2—This contribution to the celebrity canon is by no means the worst, and Foxworthy's collection of light verse courts both fans of the comedian and their children. The brief poems are perfect for rote memorization assignments and cover familiar, kid-friendly topics like lost baseball hats and bubble baths. Björkman's artwork peppers every page with tykes and friendly suburban wildlife in perpetual states of pop-eyed delight. Alert readers may spot a note on the verso of the title that suggests an "I Spy"-esque hunt for images in the illustrations for the poem "What Do You See?" The suggestion looks and feels like an afterthought, buried as it is in fine print amid the bibliographic data. But never mind; this is still a respectable choice. Kudos to Foxworthy for his role in the production of an appealing, easy read.—Catherine Threadgill, Charleston County Public Library, SC

5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain GREAT--and I'm picky!, March 5, 2008

My kids are still small, and I've wanted to introduce them more to rhyme and poetry. But I feel that most kids' poetry books are somehow over their heads, or they're just not big enough yet. My big girl is 7. I happened to run into this one today, and WOW, I thought the subject matter had such kid appeal, really sweet and kind, light, funny stuff (and not disgusting either!). So kudos to Jeff Foxworthy, hat's off to you, I didn't know you had this in you too. Illustrations great too. Hope you do some more!

This book is everything you need in a childrens book. It's silly, funny, and the poems are not too long. Really great for children and adults.

4.0 out of 5 stars Artwork A, poems C, April 4, 2008

This review is from: Dirt on My Shirt (Hardcover)
This kids' poetry book is worth buying for the fluid illustrations, but the poems are a bit uninspired. One called "Sharing a Bed" reads: "Sharing a bed with your cousins, Is not the easiest thing, They toss and they turn, They giggle and snore, And sometimes, They just like to sing."

Nothing wrong with that, but it's no Dr. Seuss or Shel Silverstein.

But back to the art. Every page has a colorful pen-and-ink over watercolor that tells a story. A double-spread painting for "What Do You See?" includes a list of 33 things to search for. Another of "Uncle Keith" eating corn on the cob has him munching so fast he's a blur.

For more creative wordplay, check out Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends as well as that late author's "new" title Don't Bump the Glump!.

Also great: Most any of the Skippyjon Jones titles or these Seuss classics:
There's a Wocket in My Pocket! Dr. Seuss's Book of Ridiculous Rhymes
Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You : Dr. Seuss's Book of Wonderful Noises
