Editorial Reviews

Multi-dimensional drummer, keyboardist, composer and arranger Gary Husband hits his stride with Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2, his latest release on Abstract Logix Records. Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2 features an explosive all-star line-up of guest musicians such as John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jan Hammer, Robin Trower, Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Mark King, Alex Machacek and Mike Stern.

Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2 does not merely pick up where 2010's Volume 1 left off. Volume 2 expands upon Gary's musical vision of creating music that is passionate and sophisticated, yet infused with grit and rawness. The mix of Husband originals and cover tunes are driven by the combination of the dynamic powerhouse drumming, ferocious lead lines and distinctly evocative keyboard harmony that altogether define Gary Husband's 'multiple threat' of a musical voice.

Selected highlights of Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2 are FRED 2011: A reworking of the classic Allan Holdsworth song with Holdworth on guitar and synth-master Jan Hammer taking an extended fire breathing solo. SULLEY: a stompin' rocker with the great John McLaughlin on guitar and bassist Mark King getting down and dirty. YESTERNOW EPILOGUE: guitarist Robin Trower continues his Strat-soaked blues rave-up that was teasingly hinted at on YESTERNOW PREVIEW from Volume 1. Alex Machacek deliciously smouldering on his self-penned LOCK, STOCK & TWO SMOKING BROTHERS. ENGLAND GREEN: an evocative Husband original with Jimmy Herring playing the lyrical theme on guitar. NEW BLUES, OLD BRUISE: a John McLaughlin composition given a jazzier edge featuring rising tenor sax star Sean Freeman. Not to mention other new GH originals featuring the angular intelligence of Wayne Krantz and the fiery, electric bop of Mike Stern. With a roster of top-tier musicians and stellar performances, Gary Husband's Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2 promises to be one of the most musically exciting and musically rewarding releases of 2012.

If you are into jazz-rock or if you ever were, this album will remind you of the music and energy that started with the post Bitches Brew era of Miles Davis. Gary Husband has proved himself to be a great composer and a producer/arranger. The star cast of so many artists who are all giants in their careers, play their ass off.Allan Holdsworth and Jan Hammer (heard after a long time) bursting into Fred reminds us of the one and only Tony Williams. John McLaughlin and Mark King's Sulley rock and funk like modern day "Sly and the Family Stone".
Jimmy Herring, Alex Machacek, Wayne Krantz and Gary Husband himself are all members of the "Abstract Logix" label-roster who have totally revived this genre of music, unlike some labels that spend time in doing chop fest or smooth jazz records. The great Robin Trower, Ray Russell, Mark King, Jimmy Johnson, and "everyone else" on this thing are playing their butt off. This is a standout all star record that works very well and the cohesiveness of it makes it for many listens over and over again. Dirty and Beautiful Volume 2 is totally worth every penny and much more !!

This is a great offering for people who love hearing different sets of supergroup formats. I had bought the original Tony Williams Lifetime with Allan Holdsworths "Fred" on it and fell in live with it. Fred 2011 is great new take on a classic. Jimmy Johnson just cruises through with a killer bass track. Volume 1 is a great set of people also who make it believable that they HAVE played together for years. Very refined.

Drummer, keyboardist, composer, and producer Gary Husband continues to raise the bar with each successive release, and 2012's Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2 is no exception. This new collection of originals and fusion classics follows up 2010's Volume 1 with many of the collaborators who graced that recording: Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Jimmy Johnson, Mark King, Jan Hammer, Laurence Cottle, Robin Trower, and Livingstone Brown. Bassist Teymur Phell and Level 42 sax alum Sean Freeman join powerhouse guitarists Wayne Krantz, Jimmy Herring, and Mike Stern to round out this already heady lineup.

Of particular interest on this disc is the appearance of young Grammy nominee Alex Machacek on guitar, who contributed his original "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Brothers" to an already potent group of tunes. Tears for Fears' Neil Taylor also lends some deliciously blues-inflected guitar work to Jan Hammer's "Rain", backed by Husband's exquisite keyboards and rich drumming. "Sulley" juxtaposes John McLaughlin with Mark King's inimitable slap bass for a really fun extended musical romp.

The Tony Williams' New Lifetime classic "Fred" takes on a new life as "Fred 2011" with Allan Holdsworth's legendary guitar prowess at the helm. Williams and Holdsworth fans alike will enjoy this update with keyboardist Jan Hammer and bassist Jimmy Johnson. It also may sound reasonably familiar if you've seen Allan Holdsworth live in the last few years.

Husband's own "Fuguie," a stunningly gorgeous solo keyboard outing, evokes both the ethereal and the emotional. This particular piece is sure to be a listener favorite.

Husband also revisits "England Green", previously featured on 1998's "Diary of a Plastic Box".
