Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-Bertie just loves everything that adults consider dirty. He picks up candy from the street and boogers from his nose. He hunts for slugs and worms and pees on the flowers along with his cat. All this is performed to constant admonishments from those around him, "No, Bertie! That's dirty, Bertie!" He learns the hard way to stop most of his bad habits with one exception, picking his nose. The text is uninspired and the illustrations too broadly cartoonish and unattractive. Those looking for a good read about bad behavior would be better served by David Shannon's eponymous tales (Scholastic).

My 6,4 and 2 year old all love this book. They think it is hilarious. They love to shout out "No Bertie, that's dirty Bertie" . I thought it may have been a little young for my 6 year old but I think the "oooh yuck factor" won him over. He liked it so much he couldn't wait to take it to school so his teacher could read it to the class. It makes everyone giggle and I recommend it highly , so do my kids!

What a great book. It is short but it's so incredibly funny that my girls (4 and just about to turn 3) are laughing hysterically at Bertie's disgusting habbits that when we are finished we read it all over again.
They love saying out loud - "THAT'S DIRTY BERTIE!".
It's just a great fun book to read with your kids and have a good laugh with them as well.
Wondeful illustrations.

If you can laugh at yourself a bit, and you are not afraid to talk to your child about boogers, pee and an occasional fart, you are going to have a complete blast with Bertie. We use the recurring line: "No Bertie' that's dirty Bertie!" on a regular basis in our family. The illustrations are very high quality and have inherent humor and consistency, with small recurring characters between pages. Bertie is naughty without being bad, and funnily disgusting. We have other books David Roberts has written and illustrated and find him a great children's author.

Bertie has some dreadful habits that horrify his family, who all scream out "No Bertie! That's dirty Bertie!" every time he's caught out. But Bertie also learns for himself (as we see from the pictures) why these habits are considered "dirty".

My daughter discovered this book at pre-school and when I offered to buy her a special story to commemorate finishing pre-school, she asked for this one. The whole family thinks that Dirty Bertie is hilarious and "No Bertie! That's dirty, Bertie!" has become a household catchphrase.

If you're happy to giggle at a picture of a bottom or if you think it's time to discuss WHY nose-picking is dirty, this is the book for you. Some negative reviewers of this book have said it teaches bad habits, but I actually found that my kids were interested in talking about why Bertie's habits were so dirty, and why we don't do things like that. Don't mean to brag but I'm happy to report that none of my children have been licking the dog's face or weeing in the garden since reading this book. If your child is indulging in anti-social "dirty" habits, this is a great way to tackle the problem with good humour and helpful illustrations.
